I've just booked myself on a Direct access course (mainly because the training centre was charging the same price for DAS and A2!) My intention was to do A2 and buy a baby 250 ninja but now i'm going to be entitled to ride any machine. I definately want a sports bike but I imagine its pretty foolish to get straight on a supersports with no real experience?
Is a 600cc sports a bit much for a Noob?
Any other ideas for a 1st sports bike or should I go for the 250 ninja?
Is it ever worth buying a bigger machine and restricting it for a year to gain some experience? (and a big discount in my first year of insurance)
Thanks for reading that essay and your help

If you were going to do A2 and get a 250 ninja, and only decided to do the DAS because it was the same price, why do you now definitely want a sportsbike?

Just for the sake of it? Neutral

I think jumping on a sportsbike with no real experience would be lunacy. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

By all means do the DAS but I'd buy something cheap and sensible in your first year, cheaper insurance, and you will build experience with less chance of killing yourself Wink

Your right hand is the restrictor. If you "can't trust yourself", then Pistonheads would like to hear from you. Wink

Why get a sportsbike to ride it slowly though? Thinking

If you've just after the looks, how about this?

GS500F. Do DAS, get one of those, upgrade if and when you feel ready.

To be fair that gs500f actually looks pretty nice. I saw one today on the way back from mod 1 and thought it looked pretty nifty. A quick search of ebay has shown you can get a 6 year old one in good condition with a full mot for around £2k. I might put it down on the big boy bike list myself and maybe go and have a look at one once I'm done with the A2.

One thing though, would these not get some stick for the same reason the four stroke 125 sports bikes do- people argue that they're just commuters covered in plastic?

Anybody giving you stick for being sensible with your choice of first big bike is a muppet, with their head up their backside, and not worth listening to.

The GS is easy to ride, bulletproof and cheap to run/insure. Thats why training schools use them.
