PostPosted: 06:51 - 05 May 2012    Post subject: Sludge in Air Filter? Reply with quote

Just changed the plugs, oil and filter, and air filter on my Honda VT500ED. When I took the old air filter out it was quite wet, and there was a chunk of brown sludge pooled in the bottom of the airbox.

I'm guessing that somehow water is mixing with oil and going through the air filter, but I have no idea where to start looking for this. Any suggestions appreiated.

You'll have an oil breather pipe coming up from the crankcase to the airbox (so that oil fumes get sucked through the engine and burned up, rather than laying in a film over the hedgerows) so that's where the oil is coming from. "Some" is Ok and normal, "lots" and blue smoke from the exhaust needs looking at.

But I would be more concerned about the filter being wet - been riding through big puddles recently?

Wasn't a huge amount, and no blue smoke, so that's good, thanks

Well, it has been very wet around here recently. But the filter is enclosed, so it shouldn't be that.

Does your air filter box have a condensation trap? Usually a stubby rubber pipe on the bottom of the box, at the lowest point.

Sometimes these get blocked and condensation builds-up in the air box, eventually finding its way into the engine oil - which can be seen through the level sight-glass.

An effective cure is to replace the short rubber tube with a longer one of clear PVC hose, and check it regularly for clogging.

Ah, this makes sense. I'll need to check and see if there is one, but the filter is at the lowest point. I don't have a sight-glass, so won't be able to check that.

If there isn't a trap, could I drill one? A small one shouldn't affect the air flow, should it?

Thanks
