 |
|
Hi guys.
Has anyone had any supermoto wheel's built for them for a fairly mundane trail bike like a Kawasaki KMX? I would like to get some wheels built for mine, and keep the original hubs, with stainless spokes, and a set of black powercoated alloy rims.
The first specialist's quote i have had is £600!
I was hoping to get a pair of wheels built for the £350-400 mark if that is reasonable and sounds realistic?
Anyone know of any wheel builders that could do the job a bit cheaper? Or is it even worth considering lacing up the wheels myself and getting a decent shop to true them up after?
Has anyone built their own SM wheels and how hard would you say it is to learn to build a set yourself? im happy to pay to have someone build them for me too, but £600 is way too much of my budget gone to be worth considering, and so im looking for other options or id just have to go with road tyres on the std sized wheels instead failing all else? |

There is a good picture by picture step here of a BCF forumite doing their own wheels here https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=233806&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=150
If you have a pair of hubs that are in good condition then you are 50% there. If you then buy a pair of rims from a breakers with the right number of holes in the rims then all that you need are the spokes,be they galvanised or stainless.Again, the BCF post above shows how relatively easy it is to find the right parts via the 'net. ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

One of the KMX lads is in the process of fitting SM hoops to his.
What he's done is found some secondhand wheels - got them from a DRZ400SM - and got them laced up to the KMX hubs.
Keeps the cost down - looking like 120 quid to do the wheels in total, including buying secondhand wheels complete.
As the front hoop is a 17 - instead of a 21 - some adjustment is needed of the geometry of the bike to suit - either raising the front or dropping the rear a few inches. This could probably be done by changing the link in the rear suspension to lower it. ____________________ 1988 Kawasaki KMX 200

I've been considering sticking SM rims onto some spare hubs that I have. A company in Leeds seem able to supply and fit stainless rims and spokes for a little under £400 for both wheels:-
