I ride a 650 deauville 2003. If I forget to fill up or just misjudge mileage and end up going onto reserve the bike always stalls if its not moving or if its going uphill. the problem is that if I then try to start the engine i always Either flood it Or fuel feed is insufficient and i end up stranded with a flat battery !
tis has happened a few times now and I have had to take to carrying jump leads round with me in the panniers !

check the tank is not sucking or creating a vacumm. Open the filler cap and listen for a whoosh sound while you do it.

It happened again yesterday morning..I went to start bike for work and it died after starting..checked level and very low ..switched to reserve and left petrol cap open to let air in. battery went flat due to turning it over so many times and no start. obviously not enough fuel getting through.. started fine with jump cables linked to neighbours car ! the starter motor on Deauville takes a LOT of charge from battery !

If this is only when on Res then i would say the tap is needing looked at. If it does it on on also then carbs need a clean. Try cracking the drain bolt on each carb first and let it drain. Bit of luck the offending shit will come out but i think you have shit in the tank and that and the carbs want a clean.

I thought only the 700 Deauvilles were FI, although I am most likely mistaken.

I used to have a Deauville that did this, and it was the fuel pump that was in need of an overhaul.

Pipster, your 650 has carbs mate.

Your problem appears to be a faulty fuel pump, only evident when you have to use reserve.

There's a good Deauville forum with a popular "facet pump" mod which you should look at.

as oldie says, sounds like fuel pump issue. the reason it works on reserve when full is down to the pressure of a full tank pushing the fuel through. when empty, the pressure drops, so it wont start.

a lot of ntv owners have bypassed the pump in an emergency, only to find that when the fuel drops low, the engine dies Sad

you can get a points replacemnt kit for the pump from ebay. for about £25 it's worth a go Smile
