Hi All

So far the help I have had on here has been great so thanks a lot.

I bought a new battery about a year ago for my Speedfight 100cc and the bike was stood from Mid November for about 6 weeks then used around Christmas but the battery had gone flat. Its been used since but keeps losing its charge.

I charged it for about 8 hours the other day and it was fine and ok the next day but a few days later it didnt have quite enough charge to start the bike.

Should it be knackered like this after a year. It was cheap I suppose about £27 from a dealer in Darlington.

I charged it on a car charger which some have said is not good but others have told me it should be ok.

I think its a model YTX5L-BS. Ill be taking the bike away for the summer shortly in June so wondered if I should just charge it up and then use it every day (it charges off the engine ok) or should I just buy a better battery and if so where from?

I can use the kick start but that had to be recently replaced at a cost of £120 as I wore it out when I had the automatic choke problem (see first thread)

Cheers
Barry

If it has gone completely flat, and been left that way, then often they cannot be recovered.
If it keeps going flat then it's knackered and you will need a new one.
You should invest in a trickle charger for the winter, cheaper that a new battery every year.

Thanks for the reply.

I wondered if it was an inferior battery though as the one before it lasted a good few years and was often left unused for long lengths of time.

If they are disconnected and kept inside the house will they last ok?

If your not using the bike especially in cold winter months, then disconnect the battery terminals, and charge it every 2weeks or so. I would still keep it in the garage instead of keeping a battery inside a warm house though.

The best bet is a cheap automatic trickle charger though, as you can leave it on all the time and it will maintain and condition the battery to keep it in good condition.

The std battery is up to the job if it is a good quality unit and is regulary charged if the machine is not in daily use.

You can however fit a Honda CBR400 battery to the speedfight, just as a useful thing to know. It is the same dimensions and fits in the battery tray, but it about 1" taller. It needs the retaining strap modifiying (cable ties! Laughing ) and it has a higher amp/hour rating, so if you were going to run any electrical accessories etc, it's probably a better option.
