Hi, seen a bit about this so a quick question.... Should I learn about it now, or is it not important/ is it taught on CBT?

Cheers Smile

Don't even rhink about counterstearing.....

It is a natural part of riding ANY bike.

You start thinking about it, you will end up on the deck.

In my rather limited experience, it's not something you should worry about. I've taken advice myself from the forum, and I've realised it's not something I consciously do, it just happens...

Over to the gurus...

Don't need to worry about it before your CBT.

Consider looking it up after.

See threads on Newbie on teh topic.

Bikes steer by leaning. Counter-steering, is a technique you will probably use intuiitively to initiate a bike to lean and hence steer.

Conciouse counter steering, or 'positive' counter steering is using the technique more conciousely to deliberately make a bike lean into a turn, & it is a very useful technique on bigger and heavier bikes.

No, probably NOT tight duricng CBT, though you may like to enquire about it of your instructor.

HOWEVER..... DOING your CBT was the FIRST thing on your LIST... remember?

You were told to go away and NOT ask any more silly questions until you had done something on the list, remember?

Do I have to give you some bad Khama? Have you done anything yet? CBT booked? Bought a bike? Done your Theory? Twisted Evil

CBT booked for Sunday, viewing a bike after CBT Smile

And IMO it wasn't a silly question, I thought it was kind of advanced really....

Indeed it is an advanced question if you wanted to use it deliberately during riding, but little steps first...get on a bike and lear to ride it well, then add in 'advanced' technique when you master the basics!

Over complicating, and over thinking things will lead you on a steep, often impossible to overcome learning curve!!

Can't fault your enthusiasm, but you'll have more than enough to cope with on the CBT without thinking about countersteering. Concentrate on looking where you're going, and that's where the bike will go (up to a point). It's just magic.

Have you been working on your roadcraft? Lanes, lights, signs, roundabouts, waving nonchalantly at totty?

I would not worry about it before or during your CBT, but it's something I'd look in to pretty damn soon afterwards, it improved my control of my CG125 big time and helped my cornering immensely, I find I can get much more precise control of direction via conscious countersteering than leaning.

I don't think I would have picked it up by myself either; I had to read about and try it to understand. Despite riding a pushbike for a few years when younger. I wouldn't say it was an advanced technique myself, it's pretty basic but really useful to know how to do it.

They didn't mention it in my CBT but you'll want to try at as soon as you have your first bike. Find a quiet, gentle corner and give it a shot knowing that your actually doing it. Once you've got over the "say whaaa?" phase, then like pendulum said it will improve your cornering.

I discovered it myself going round a roundabout, I'm into physics and it just clicked! "Holy balls, I'm pushing right to turn right, why?" went through my head. I think it's because by pushing right, you initially steer the wheels to the left of you therefore shifting your mass to the right of the wheels and you end up leaning right.

Try it a little (and I mean a tiny little bit consciously) at low speed with no traffic around when you get a bike. It's actually how you steer anyway but you just don't think about it.

Using it consciously means you can get around tighter corners faster and avoid things quickly with less chance of falling off. I actually used it yesterday when some nutter drove from the opposite side of the road in front of me to park. I swerved and honked her for her stupidity, without the countersteering I'd have hit her head on.

before activily considering the conscious counter steering techniques, master the art of always looking t the point you want to be at, the bike will follow.
