I've just booked myself on a Direct access course (mainly because the training centre was charging the same price for DAS and A2!) My intention was to do A2 and buy a baby 250 ninja but now i'm going to be entitled to ride any machine. I definately want a sports bike but I imagine its pretty foolish to get straight on a supersports with no real experience?
Is a 600cc sports a bit much for a Noob?
Any other ideas for a 1st sports bike or should I go for the 250 ninja?
Is it ever worth buying a bigger machine and restricting it for a year to gain some experience? (and a big discount in my first year of insurance)
Thanks for reading that essay and your help

i'm 26 so I aint gonna be riding like an idiot out showing off and racing everyone straight after my test (grew out of that in my mod'd fiesta Very Happy )
I've been looking at ZX6r's, Do you think i would be able to handle one easily as a 1st bike?
I imagine it feels a bit safer on motorways etc on a bigger bike?

Personally I would generally recommend a 250 as a first bike, especially without knowing you. You don;t have to keep it long but it's the safer option and will teach you a lot. A 250 ninja has 45 hp and is a nice light sportbike, you would enjoy it.

Its still high on my list and will definately be a cheeper option with insurance Confused

I was 17 when I had my first ZX6R. I was 19 with my second which was full power. You'll be fine mate. It's good on motorways and as I already dsaid if gives you plenty of poke for when you need it. I would personally advise against a 250 ninja. Over priced and you will not get the benefit of a learning to ride a big bike.

Go for something you think you will be happy with for a few years mate, A 250 ninja with 32bhp will soon get boring for you.

My 2ps worth Smile

Cheers mate I think it'll come down to if I can get my insurance at a semi reasonable price. I was also thinking that if i get a 250 its still going to be a huge jump when i move up later on. For eg. 32hp up to 108hp on a newer ZX6r, might just be best to learn as I mean to go on.

Exactly mate, Why do your direct access then get a bike you can ride of an A2 license Very Happy The bike will only ever go as fast as you make it go. ZXR's are amazing bikes mate. I've had 3 so I'm biased Smile

I would get a sports tourer if I was you to start with, I started on a fazer 600 myself, great bike still got the power, got good mirrors so feel safe as you can see everything around you, I have just got myself a new r6 which I love but as a first bike would be hard going, they don't want to turn at slow speeds, junctions ect, clutch is just on or off , it's ok for me as I had the fazer for year and half and raced motocross for years so I'm used to bikes but as I newbie myself i wouldn't jump straight on a 600 sports bike.

That's me personal

Trouble is you are going to get bored with a big bike if you try and ride it slow, I guarantee you will pin it in the first month and may not have the experience to cope with the consequences.

I'm looking at so many used bikes just dont know how old is generally safe to go? and how much mileage is too much? Am I always just better off paying the premium and buying from a dealer for the safety and accountability for problems?

I would say that was down to the R6. R6 isn't really ideal for a new rider as the new models are so focused on being amazing on track they start to lose some of the road going benefits. For example I think the 2CO R6 comes standard with a quick action throttle which will not benefit a new rider in the slightest.

T12 for insurance purposes I think you'd be fine. At 17 on a restricted bike I paid £700 and at 19 on a full power C1H I paid £320ish Smile Run a few quotes through and have a look. They are also pretty decent price aswell, You will pick up a near mint G2 for £1400-1500 or a Near mint J model for £1600-1700.

Simple question to ask yourself. Ignore what everybody here says and thinks and ignore all th safetly and worrying ect. What motorcycle would you like to ride?

WHen I learnt I was looking at all the different bikes people were telling me about and in the end I found 2 bikes I liked. A K2 600 Gixxer and a G2 ZX6R. I went to veiw both and fell in love with the ninja.

Dupe post, dupe suggestion. GS500F.

https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/200810/2008-suzuki-gs500f-3_460x0w.jpg

Quicker than a 250, more confidence inspiring to ride, cheaper to insure, easier to sell on, looks the business.

Find a showroom or bikeshow that will let you sit on some. I went to a local breakers, they left me alone whilst me n the good lady wheeled out and tried the bikes on for size.

A Fireblade was surprisingly roomy even 2 up but still too focussed and powerful for my skills and needs.

Think about your skills and experience. Think what you want from the bike.

I don't know much about sports bikes as a first bike, but I would advise against a 250 ninja, you'd pay top dollar for one, and from next January will be worth peanuts due to the licencing laws.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the CBR600F.

I got mine after DAS and it's been absolutely flawless. Up and down the country, all over the place, all weather, all year. I got a 2004 one with 18k miles for £2700. It had been dropped on one side and has a scratched AC cover, but that's fine with me as it made me less precious and less nervous about dropping it. So far the only time I've dropped it was in fresh snow on ungritted roads, coming to a stop and used the front brake. What a mong.

Goes fast when I want to go fast. Goes slow when I want to go slow. All I have to do is look at where I want to go and it handles all the corners and obstacles for me. Most of the time it feels like the bike is doing the driving.

It's funny since I often read this forum and look through eBay and classifieds to see what other bikes are available and nothing really takes my fancy. Can easily see myself sticking with this bike forever.

I wuv u CBR600F. <3 xoxo

I passed my test in March.I started with an old beat up XJ600 which I couldn't wait to get rid of,I hated it.
I now have 1998 Fazer, and must say how impressed I am with it.Ride is comfortable, handling is really great for a newbie. As regards acceleration it is bloody brilliant without realising it you can be above the speed limit within a few seconds if you wish to be.
I wish i'd started with the Fazer.
