PostPosted: 09:25 - 08 May 2012    Post subject: Tyres time :( got some quotes... Reply with quote

On previous bikes always stuck to a more sporty set, but my commute means I square them off quickly.

Been quoted (fitted);
Pilot Road 3 £320
Pilot Road 2 £275
Bridgestone 023 £270

Can anyone provide an insight as to which would last the longest and be the best investment? Are the PR3's worth the extra money?

Thanks

I've just had PR3s fitted. Had PR2's in the past and they were great - they were the reason for me trying out the 3s. The PR3's feel even better in my opinion, they seem to give more feedback in both wet and dry conditions. Mileage I can't comment on - the PR2s were already on the bike when I bought it, and I've only done a few hundred miles on the 3s. I had them fitted to loose wheels for £259.

Those prices are REALLY high. BT023s should be about £230 and PR3s £250, fitted. At least they were when I got mine done a couple of months ago.

My mate's PR3s on his CBF600S are on about 10,000 and counting. Both look like they could do at least another 5,000. I'll measure the tread when I get home if you like. He does ride like a saint most of the time though.

ZZR600, were on it when he bought it 13,000 ago. Unsure of age before that but he has loads of tread left Laughing Like he doesn't hang around either, I am amazed at the life of them Thumbs Up

Agreed - I've done same, the PR3's give great feedback and grip levels compared.

Michelin were doing £25 cashback on PR3 purchases when I bought mine a month ago, might be worth checking to see if they're still doing that.

As for prices - can't remember sizes off top of head but for my Sprint they were £290 fitted to the bike, so £290 minus £25 turned out a good deal really.

Good to read the good feedback regarding PR3's, getting the back swapped over on mine to one tonight (got pilot powers on there at the moment and went through the rear tyre in about 4000 miles).

Got a track day at Rockingham on Sunday so willl be able to push it hard and see what the grip is really like, from what I've heard it is suprisingly good though!

I paid £135 for just the rear tyre off ebay (brand new from demon tweeks online shop on there I think it was) and it will cost me £15 for fitting and balancing so £150 all in. Have you had a look at ebay to see how much a pair would be off there and then just take them to the garage and get them fitted? I always do this and it works out to be a much better price.

Put it this way - the only problem I have with them is GODDAMN they're an ugly tyre. The front looks like a predator's face, sliced up with a cheese grater.

Looks like it, but also looks like it finished at the end of April Sad Boo.

I thought I had them fitted in April, so could have used the invoice, but I think it was right at the beginning of May Sad Still worth the money though Thumbs Up

I like the look of the tread pattern, reminds me of race wets. It's nice that a tyre manufacturer has actively gone after wet performance rather than just dry performance.

5000miles so far out of my PR2's and still going strong, they don't seem to wear out! and I'm not exactly gentle on them.

I didn't think the rear tyre looks that bad personally! Haven't got it on the bike yet so will have to see what it looks like on, I'm not that fussed to be honest though as long as they do what I need them to!

Just had a look at that cash back offer as well, was filling it out when I saw your post about it running out in April. Sad

This thread makes me wonder why the fuck I am only getting 6k out of an angel ST rear and 3k out of a pilot power rear? American forum users get 10k out of the STs on my bike but I assumed it was because they are American and cannot ride properly.

I don't ride fast or too much like a twat, I use the bike for work so 95% of mileage is commuting. I get 45mpg+ out of my CBR6 so can't be riding too much like a bellend.

Maybe I'm too fat and I act like an air brake.

Lol Laughing

Does seem a bit strange though - I managed ~9k out of a set of Dunlop Roadsmarts which were already on the bike and pretty worn when I got it!

Type of roads, type of riding? Maybe...

Sounds about right, great tyre but I have to move away from them because it adds so much to the running cost of the bike.

I got a fair few thou out of the Angel ST on the Daytona (Was on the bike from 6,000 I sold at 14,000)

Pilot Power 2CT was toast in 2000 miles on the GSXR.

The Angel is a fairly decent tyre but is overly soft on the edges, the PR2 seems to be like a rock in the centre

I was starting to question my decision on going for a set of BT023's on my FZ6.

I did look at the PR3's as an alternative, and seeing as I'll do most of my commuting in Wales, where it always rains all the fucking time they were the obvious choice.

But, I stuck to the Bridgestones because generally I really like the tyres they make, I've never had any moments on them what so ever. Even the squared off bald BT020 I took off gave me a lot of confidence in the bike.

I took the bike out on 2 brand new 023's, in the pissing rain. Gave it a couple of miles for the bike to warm up and then started accelerating nice and hard in the middle of corners to try and get a bit of wheel spin..... Nothing. Pinned it in second off a roundabout, nothing.

Really, as has been said before; there is so little difference between the tyres now that just go for the one you like the look of the most.

EDIT:

Paid £209 fitted to loose wheels and balanced. Not bad!

I recommend having a spare rear wheel, that way you can use the squared off one on the commute, and switch to fresh rubber for the weekend twisties.

Can you recommend a place to pick up spare wheels though? Would like a set for the fz to put race slicks on them but can’t seem to find any (must admit I haven’t looked amazingly hard!).

cant comment on the other tyres as i've not used em but i can wholly recommend the 23s.

excellent grip and durability. got a pair on my blade and the fronts currently at about 10k miles and looking new, and i replaced the rear at about 8.5k

also razzed round silverstone on a 600RR on a set at a ron haslam race school and can confirm they really do grip, even at track speeds Smile
