Evening everyone,

went to buy my first set of leathers today, long story short Infinity's 0% finance wouldn't let me have them. I'll have to save properly, but I was wondering what everyone's opinions are on the following:

Dainese Avro Pelle Jacket
Dainese SF Trousers
Racer Multi Top Gloves

Cheers Smile

I might come across as a sensible old fart but why so expensive if you need finance? Best to look at sales etc & spend less than half that amount....certainly not worth putting yourself in debt over imo.....your money though so up to you mate.

Have to agree with Ferret here.

Fair enough I have a post running in the other forum on second hand leathers, but that's not because I can't afford new stuff, far from it.

No doubt Dainese make good kit, but there is a limit to how much your gear is going to help, good quality cheap stuff will be just fine sliding along the road, and the best of the best in the world won't do fuck all if you go under an HGV or collide with a solid object like a wall.

I don't think it's worth going into debt over a few labels and some marginally reduced chance of a bruised knee or whatever. Noone except you gives a shit what you look like when you're riding (within reason).

Then again, I have a pretty rabid obsession with not getting into debt unless it's absolutely necessary. Mortgage, sure, that saves you money long term on rent. Student or career development loan, if you have no other way of raising the funds - it'll probably raise your earning potential. Same with business loans.

But borrowing money for clothes? I'd rather have a secure roof over my head, a set of gear I own outright, and a bike I know I'll be able to afford to run for as long as I see fit. Some people are poor due to bad luck - others are poor due to bad choices.

If you're dead set on the high end stuff, at least have a look what's out there.

£95 with delivery for a used pair, I've seen new but unused go for not much more.

0% finance means fuck all when you've just dropped the best part of £1k on what (after a point) essentially becomes a fashion item.

i cant see the point in buying leathers on finance, but RST and similar companies do cheap leathers that are just as good quality as Dianese but without the name.

Indeed.

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_cat/1016

Random link off the internet - £300 on there.

If you don't have £300 in your bank account then how do you manage to run a bike?

Also HG own brand leather trousers are good quality, and affordable. Got my Astars jacket second hand years ago off eBay for £75, why pay hundreds when there are just as good alternatives as mentioned by others above.

Unless you want to look like a colour matched power ranger in the latest fashions, that is.

But saying that, my first leathers were the hein gericke Celtic star ones, which really did look very garish and power rangery... Held up very well in a crash though. Still have them, although the waist is somewhat tight.

I can't tell if the bike in your picture is a 125 or not. It looks like a Hyosung. If its, don't bother. If not, then even so you might be better off saving for a bike more appropriate for knee down tomfoolery.

Oh and buying leathers on finance? Jesus. Stop right there, don't apply for any more finance quotes and buy some bargain stuff or good secondhand kit off ebay.

And I need Alyson Hannigan to be wriggling around on my lap.

Wait... "need" means the same as "want", right? Thinking

To get my stuff I just sat on there looking at absolutely everything on offer, sorted by 'auction ending soonest', and looked down the whole list, added stuff to my watch list.

Often the real bargains are things that people didn't label properly (like if they just type Dainese Jacket, and you search for leather jacket, or motorcycle jacket, it won't come up). Or stuff with no photos, riskier but often cheaper because others are too afraid to bid or whatever.

Took a fair few hours of trawling, but saved me a few hundred quid. A bit like getting paid £50+ an hour to sit on an auction site really. Very Happy

I got a weird completely blank black canvas jacket from the sale rail in my local bike shop which has decent shoulder and elbow pads. It's warm, waterproof, windproof, has loads of pockets and stuff and made coming off my bike feel almost pleasant. £60 was all.

You trackday hero.

My point was that there are better things to spunk that much money on, particularly on finance, when there are other more affordable ways of getting the kit you need.
