I have been offered a new job which would take me along the M25 then M4 towards Maidenhead. Its only a couple of miles more on paper than my current commute but it still takes me a good 45 minutes now. Its an epic job and I really want it but I would be a little put off accepting the job if the new commute takes much longer than that.

EDIT: This is the route:

https://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp#fromNode=18260055371970|Woking,%20Surrey|STREET|500527|158511|toNode=18260050084410|SL6%200LX,%20Taplow|STREET|492035|181507

I know that bit of the M25 can be pretty rough at rush hour but does anyone use the M4 along that bit? Just trying to guage my journey time.

Biking or car?

I used to ride from uxbridge to taplow for my OU classes. The A4 and M4 were both fairly free flowing by bike (remember you're allowed in the bus lane!).

M25 is not as bad as many think - I'd think you'd be fine with that route under 45mins, especially as you're going the opposite way to the majority down the M4.

Assuming you are on a bike, the only tricky bit will be the A4 west from junction 7. That bit tends to get quite snarled up lately, especially on the huntercombe roundabout. Saying that, if you can filter it won't be an issue. Be carful where you park near Hitcham Road, I have had a car stolen from the railway station, and no way would I leave a bike in the road there. It's a nice area, but plenty of open spaces and paths for chavscum to run into after they have nicked your stereo.

On sunny days you also have the option of the long route through Bracknell on the back roads.

That's a nightmare commute on 4 wheels, ok on a bike if you don't mind constant filtering.

Both but bike mainly if weather is tolerable.

How about an across country route on the way home, to mix it up a bit....? I'm sure you could use the Windsor Road, then cut off across country to the Chobham Road B383, and then you're pretty much home, non?

Are you getting a job at PDQ? Laughing

Can't comment on the motorway stretch but as mentioned, the A4 from J7 to taplow is a cunt at the best of times Mad

Hi,

I would get off the M25 at Egham or Wraysbury and go mcro0ss country, then get back on the M4 at junction 6, IF you find the M25 is nose to tail.

Lots of fun if you like that sort of thing, as above. Variable speed cameras are irksome.
If you're confident in your filtering, should be fine.

I wouldn't go near that journey on 4 wheels for commuting.

I'm not convinced, the guy there did the rivet link on my new chain which fell off 10 miles later. Turns out it hadn't been riveted at all... Shocked

If it were me, I would take either the englefield green/old windsor route or take the backroads past bracknell. Would be a much more pleasant commute, some nice roads round that area.

I've just started a new job and the commute is 54 miles, (in a car)

I do the M40, M25 till the A3 then into sutton / croydon.

Stop start all the fucking way on the M25 in rush hour, granted it's a different part but I'd say ride if you can... And if it's sunny Razz

Also I was going to ask all those variable speed camera's, do they actually work? I have been sticking to them but have noticed a large number of outside lane troopers going past at what 70 / 80 when the speed says 60 ect.

Cheers Thumbs Up
