Currently having a browse through eBay, Gumtree and the rest looking for cheap leathers.

I'm not averse to spending a bit for quality stuff, but I don't see the sense in buying new, I don't care that much about fashion as long as there's no ridiculous crap like tribal signs or whatever. As long as it's real and the stitching is all good, what's the difference?

Arlen Ness, A*, Dainese stuff is probably going to be alright, but what about some of the other brands? Frank Thomas? RST?

I've seen quite a lot of cheap 'Akito' stuff but I've never heard of them before.

Problem compounding this is that it seems to be far easier to get my size in the 'off branded' stuff, 36" chest makes me a runt.

Well, managed to get a pair of Frank Thomas trousers in my size for a decent price. We'll see if they actually get here, if they're crap no big loss.

My "cheap" Akito jacket that I purchased at £100 is actually the best jacket I have ever worn, being made out of leather it is extremely waterproof, armored really durable, great stitching and great at keeping the right temperature. As I suffer from Secondary Raynaud's leather is my preferred material for regulating heat its of vital importance.

Also purchased some Akito trousers second hand that are padded amazing quality even with them being second hand and same again regulates the temperature.

Cheers for the advice. Still after a jacket so I'll look out for them. Buying this stuff way in advance because I reckon I'll go through a few that don't fit first.

The way I'm thinking about it is - I can get a new set of RST stuff for about £300 at cheapest.

For that I can probably get four sets of gear second hand and sell the stuff that doesn't fit.

I also bought some on eBay, an Akito one piece. So far so good, it's doing well and looks better after some leather polishing.

I bought a set of second hand leathers on fleabay - based upon the advertised size of the jacket. The original owner must have been a bit of a mis-shape 'cos the trousers were a size smaller than the jacket.

Still I got a worn in jacket for a decent price, and a pair of trousers that I can aspire to fit into if I ever get off my arse, get fit and loose some weight. Smile

The only horror story I have with my leathers is pulling into Exeter Services dying for a dump wearing a leather 2 piece. If anyone has tried to take a dump in leathers in a tiny cubicle will know my horror.

Horror = sweaty stinky leathers Sick

Solution = underlayers. Cotton for summer. Thermal for winter.

I've got a set of RST pro-series leaters. fantastic, warm, armoured in all the right areas, look good, comfy etc etc etc.

I've also got an akito jacket, which is also great. i'd wear it if it still fit me, as i bought it when i was a skinny wee 17 year old, but now i use it for (female) pillion.

As longas they fit in that jacket, they're good enough for me Mr. Green

But yeah, i can rate both the akito and RST stuff... good pieces of kit there, and of the time i've had them, never had any stitching come out or anything like that.

Oh, and another thing, that akito jacket i have lasted every single one of my crashes (and i'm sure someone remembers how many i had when i was on the 125...), and came out with just some scratches.

Cheers

Dunc

First leather jacket I owned, was a hand-me-down with tassles and red liner and was about 12" too big around the chest...I cut off all the tassles...and wore it till it started to leak around the shoulder seams and around the inner elbow area after my crash. I think it just loosened it.

After that I went out and bought a blokes XS Hein Gericke textile jacket (again too large for me...but at least it fitted my arm length Rolling Eyes ) and I rode with that until my mate donated me her old Paddock Jacket.

My leather jeans however, have lasted forever...I actually cannot remember what year I bought them. I do know I got them from a market and paid around £50(and paid £30 to get them altered to fit me better around the hips/waist). I treat them with Dubbin, so they are in good nick considering they are well over 15years old. Cool

Most noname, cheap motorcycle leathers are made from pigskin.
Pigskin has less abrasion resistance qualities than denim !

Oh yes - definitely looking for proper material, cowhide, kangaroo, etc.
My worry is about stuff like seam quality. 5mm of kangaroo leather will do fuck all if it's single stitched improperly.

Check the seams for yourself. It should all be double stitched....

Hard to do when you're not buying new from a store. I'd thought it would be pretty universal across brands though.

Obviously if I get stuff and it looks suspect, it'll be going back.

Oh definitely.
