Been hearing that johnsons are shit, frontline don't work as well anymore, and stronghold is what's needed.

Usually go for Drontal, although we've tried other brands recently too.

Over the counter stuff is crap,

Milbemax tablet from your vet. should be around £5 for a dog under 25kg.

Milbemax treats all intestinal worms as well as lung worm which many of the others don't.

Another vote for drontal. My mum's three dogs were all on it and my little terrier has been on it for 5 years now and no signs of worms.

She gets taken on two long walks a day on popular dog walks and is 10 years old now.
Never had worms so has she just been lucky?

Adds up over 4 wormings a year.

Give them a single tablet each.

If your dogs catch treats hide the tablet in your hand and mix it in with a game of catch.

If your dog likes cheese or butter wrap it in one of those.

If your dog refuses to be poisoned at all costs you'll have to place the tab at the back of their tongue, hold their gob shut (careful not to pinch their tongue in their teeth) and stroke their throat. A massive reward like dinner being presented immediately after they've swallowed the 'poison' should help things next time round...

Yes, and it says one tablet per month for 17.20 4 tablets total ... So by my thinking or lack of, for a 11 kg dog, I could give one tablet every 6 weeks.

Am I the only person who doesn't give their dog a regular worming treatment?

Spoke to a lovely old dear in an independent pet shop and she advised me it would be fine to just treat him if he ever got worms rather than administering a preventative medicine.

The same goes for flea treatments, if he ever gets fleas I'll treat him.

Are there problems with this approach?

If your dog gets fleas you will know about it, your dog may develope an allergy /skin reaction to the fleas or even become anaemic, I too only treat for fleas when I see them.

Ticks however I treat my dog's for every Spring as these can be deadly and once they bite the dog it's often too late to react, so in the case of ticks, prevention is better than cure.

With worms, much the same as ticks, lung worm is better prevented than cured.

So in spring my dogs have good quality tick collars on and they're wormed with Milbemax every 3 to 4 months.
