Heyy there BCF Smile

Just wondering what the legal requirements are for L plates. I know it's always gonna be best to have them on front and rear.. but just unsure what is legally required.

Front only.
Rear only.
Both front and rear.

Which one is it D: ?

I remember hearing somewhere from someone that it's rear only, but I could be wrong.

Also, would L's and where they are placed make any effect on an MOT? E.g. if it's both, and I only have L on rear, would that be something they could fail the MOT on?

Cheers you lovely bunch Thumbs Up

and yes, both front and rear (not cut down in any way).

Front and rear and I have watched a TV program where they booked a scooter rider for only a rear L plate, they did him for 'otherwise in accordance with a licence'.

L plates aren't checked during MoT, but if you put an L plate over a light or reflector you can get a fail for obscuring.

Both. It's stupid as I've had to use cable ties to attach an L plate at the front of my bike.

Thanks guys Smile, just gone and bought and fitted an L for the front as well now, so that I have both on Smile.

Yeahh, that's how my old L plate was attached.. the one I've just bought works in the same way, but is properly locked on with some rather bad-ass thick metal instead of a cable tie this time Very Happy.

My rear reflector (standard one for the bike) is underneath where my L plate fits on the back of the bike, so I might just take the L's off to get it through the MOT, and pop them back on afterwards.. that way the reflector isn't obscured.. and whilst I'll be riding with my reflector hidden behind the L (this was the same setup as when I bought the bike from a garage, so surely no issue), I'll hopefully be passing my test sooner rather than later, and can just chuck the L's in the dustbin Wink.

Cheers guys, much appreciated, you knowledgeable lot Very Happy

My front one is nice & illegal, but the reality is that most police really dont care. I think that if you did actually get pulled for not displaying one or the other, it'd just be a caution

Actually it's 3 points and £60 fine for each L plate not displayed - which is harsher than a numberplate infringement.

Was it Emergency Bikers? I saw that one where the PC pulled over three kids on scooters, fair enough they needed a talking to, their scooters had shagged tyres but I thought he was just a jobsworth tw*t trying to get that one kid for riding a de-restricted bike; I don't know but I suspect the garage that inspected it did the kid a discreet favour and told the insurance company a little white lie.

Yes you need to properly display L-plates front and rear; they must be fully visible face-on so make sure you do it right.

I did get pulled once and told to pop both L's on, but the guy didn't really emphasise the need for having both.

Although saying this, he was too busy with other people.. it was one of those where they stop one in every 5 vehicles or so.. so he just sent me to the shop next door where they had L plates, and sent me on my way.

Was a bit pissed off when I turned around to come back past though, after putting my L's on.. only to get sent in to the little car park where they were doing checks again :/.. quick word with the guy though and he realised I'd already been through, so sent me off Smile.

No taking of any of my details, but he was a bike copper himself, so seemed a decent guy (y).

You can do this, an MOT test is to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, not that you are riding in accordance with your license. Just remember to put it back on after the MOT!

Doubt any sensible MOT man (or woman) would fail you for having a L infront of the back reflector, whether it is technically illegal or not.

You could just get a stick on reflector as well, like this from amazon.co.uk. Or even something like these that looks like they can be used for mounting a number plate...
https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41vaNXzSMsL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

My reflector is about the size of a 10p piece and stuck onto the number plate. That's all you need for the MOT.

I saw that episode, and to be fair plod gave them a fairly balanced bollocking. As to the 'de-restriction', the kid admitted the offence which amounts to riding without a licence or insurance, so what was the officer supposed to do, just ignore it?

All seemed good to me, the kids seemed fairly decent, if they'd been the usual gobby ped bois you see on these programs they'd have been walking home & the bikes scrapped.

I've just bought a second L plate, I'll stick it on the front some time soon. For now it's in my jacket pocket so if I get pulled over I can just say "but officer, look, I have just bought one! I'm on my way home now to fit it!"

It's a magnetic one though...I'll have to figure this out.

Probably the wrong type, but you could use a paper hole punch to put a couple of holes in it and use garden twist-tie wire to hold it in place.

My front one must be illegal as well then but the dealer fitted it.
Its been snipped and shaped so that it fits the curve nicely above the headlight. Thumbs Up

Do you think it would be safe on the front forks? I've also thought about taping it to the front mudguard but that's not so reliable.

Good idea.
You could position it so that it made contact with the spokes as you rode along so that it would sound like a motorbike. Thumbs Up

FWIW just had a chat with a lad wanting to do the first part, mod 1, of his test. His front L plate is currently stuck onto the front mudguard.

He has been told they will not accept that for his test as not fully visible from the front from a reasonable distance. I thing that this was from somewhere in York (if anyone interested I can check).

So I believe he's getting one that sticks out at the side attached to the fork or trying to get something upright near the clock (mini fly screen like).
