Im home...

Quite an eventful day as well Embarassed

got there feeling quite excited, ready and willing to learn.

We get to the bikes and thats it... i was the only one doing it on a 125 geared so had a tougher job, my god!

Slow riding i got to grips with quickly, but then came the slalom and figure of 8.... it didnt happen unfortuantely.
Resulted in me dropping the CBF 3 times, but with gentle encouragement was told to keep trying, i could do an 8 with my foot down, but it wasnt good enough. In the end we decided that i can teach myself manouveres (with help from forumers) and that they want me to pass my CBT today, as my handling ect is perfect, its just clutch control really (which they said was a big thing for most)

I go onto the 50CC moped, and completely tear the whole thing up, slalom was a piece of piss, the figure of 8 was piss, it was soo easy....

Got onto the road and loved it ALOT, 37 MPH i got it too, and he said at first i didnt have good positioning, but by the end i was perfect and extremely aware of everything around me.

Such a fantastic day in all, i did my CBT at BCMT in northwich, absolutely fantastic Very Happy now comes my test of learning clutch control on my own bike, and getting out on the road!!

TL;DR - Started on a 125, moved down to the 50cc and passed no problems at all

Good going mate.

Get your first bike ASAP! The guy I'm buying from said he's had zero interest in his bike apart from me, and he was about to give up! Apparently it's a buyer's market at the moment, demand is low due to the bad weather. Get in there quick before this sunshine lasts any longer! Cool

I got my CBT last wednesday, picking up my bike this wednesday. A week is long enough to wait Laughing
I'm now praying that I don't screw up on the 30 mile ride back from the seller's place to mine!

Thankyou very much sir Very Happy

Bike is hopefully mine next sunday, then i have to wait about 3 weeks to gather my money to insure the sodding thing Evil or Very Mad

might take it on my works car park though and practice the things i couldnt do in the CBT (slalom/figure of 8) and of course racing down the long straight flicking through gears Smile

Should be a fantastic learning curve Mr. Green Mr. Green

They said you had a problem with clutch control on the figure-of-8; were you grabbing the clutch in the turns? Bikes need POWER to keep going, cut the power and the bike falls over.

Eh, job done, although it sounds like you'll want to budget for crash bars on your bike.

Good on you for getting on with it though, and best of luck finding a decent bike in budget.

It can take a while for the clutch, gear, throttle thing to stick in the brain. Once you learn how to co-ordinate it all it becomes a lot easier (so much so you don't need to think it through).Ultimately a pass is a pass though and you will probably find it easier to learn at your own pace Smile

Thumbs Up Laughing Thumbs Up
First item off the list...
Now you have got 'on' the program, maybe things ought to start making more sense and falling into place....
(so hopefully fewer 'frustration' posts, hugh?)

1/ 'neet feet'.

Kill wobbles before they start. Practice sitting the bike, with the stand up, and without MOVING just lifting feet to pegs from floor.

It wont fall over before you get them there, and you have time to get them back down again before bike starts to tip.

SO if you can balence THAT long, in normal riding, by the time you have got the clutch half way out, and the wheels turning, feet can be on pegs, nicely planted and not wobbling around UN-balencing you, before forwards motion of bike holds you up.

2/ Bikes Steer by LEANING

To make them turn you HAVE to tip them over. Tip them over, what holds you up, is centrifugal force, to get THAT you need the bike moving, so you have to have them DRIVING, clutch out and using the throttle to make them go round.

If you try and hold bike upright, and 'teeter' through a turn, you will be fighting the thing trying to balence it with your body-weight, and NOT generating any force to pull you round, and having to use MORE bar angle to get the same degree of turn, all making it harder for yourself than needs be.

Get your feet up ' Neet-feet' to kill wobbles and stop yourself unnecessarily unbalancing the bike.

LEAN it into those tight turns to get it to turn tight.

Use POWER (and a bit of speed) to hold the bike up with centrifugal force.

3/ You do it on the THROTTLE

90% of control input on a bike is with your right mitt. Throttle control is ALL.

Apart from pulling away at a junction, or changing gear you ought to be leaving the clutch alone. NO NEED to be trying to feather it, to do slow speed manouvers, especially on a lightweight bike. If you ARE chances are you are not going fast enough to hold bike up, and again, making life harder for yourself.

Find yourself an empty car-park or similar, when you have chance, and set your figure of 8 and slalom, and set them fairly wide.

Learn to ride them, CLUTCH OUT, and on the throttle, then gradually bring them in smaller and tighter.....

But get the SPEED up first, and as you bring them in tighter KEEP the speed up.

As they get tighter they will actually get EASIER with the speed as you will be generating more centrifugal force.

BUT.... when I say get the speed up....... I mean UP as in above walking pace.... not maxed out reving the nuts of the thing in first, trying to go round at near 30!

Fast 'Jog' kind of speed.

Ok?

i did various things,

1) I let the clutch out too far and made something odd happened

2) I let the throttle off and it stalled the bike (and i dropped it unfortuanetly)

3) I got far too nervous, felt like i was going to fall, panicked and just pulled the break in Sad

i could do it by putting my foot down, which i guess is a start, i think its all confidence though right? the more practice the better... and hopefully - the first time i do it properly il be buzzing!

When I did the figure of eight, I ended up looking at the cones all the way on the turns so the turns were quite tight.
It almost felt like I was doing something wrong as I seemed to be quite close to full lock on the steering but as soon as I realized I wasn't going to fall it started to feel good and I relaxed.
Your trying to concentrate on four things and its not easy but it will come. Thumbs Up

He does know what he's on about, no argument there. Even the leaning part. While I am not recommending that you try this Exclamation it's true that bikes can be turned by leaning even at low speeds - see moto gymkhana.

When I did my CBT, we did a lot of clutch-dragging-round-the-yard stuff before trying the cones, and even at that, it was still brain melting trying to deal with throttle and clutch and rear brake and steering all at once.

So don't sweat it, I honestly think there's too much in the CBT to fit into one day from cold. You did well to get through it and get out on the road, and now you can sort out the geared stuff at your own pace.

What's this bike you're after? Got pictures of the twisted subframe?

Read what has been said, watch the vid and understand that improvement comes with seat time. The more you do the better and more natural it will feel.

Ah, yeh I used to do exactly the same thing when I was learning, I hated mini roundabouts! Once you commit to a turn, you must not touch the front brake. Front brake = instant fall over. Basically you've just got to keep the bike MOVING, Teflon Mike explains everything in the post above.

They wouldn't let us on the road until we could at least do a figure of 8 on the car park, or at least until we looked confident enough...i'm just sayin'
Find it odd they were like "lets jsut pass you and you can learn the stuff we haven't taught you well on your own"

At least you've passed, be careful out there, crash-vibes
And I wont laugh at the fact they put you on a moped

Nah, don't sweat it, the more you ride the better you'll get, now get yourself a bike!!

First I was like "RRRRAGH IS TRAINING, NOT TEST!", then I was "Eh, they did go through the required modules, and OP seems happy enough".

If he wasn't going to get it on the day, he wasn't going to get it. Probably as well to get the DL196 up front, and then decide whether he wants/needs to pay for more time on a geared 125.

I dunno about that, unless he's the quitter type but I don't know him.
I came back for a second day on the CBT and was glad because of it, was far more confident the second time

Not as confident as I was alone though so I do get why they said that really.

Careful Now, if someone offers to help you with your "slow speed handling", it may not be quite what you're expecting.
