Dear BCF,

I want to get the hell out my parents house. Not that we don't get along or anything, I get on with them better than ever now really - but i'm 22 this year, got a decent thing going at work and feel it's time to fly the nest (again)

This time I wont have a dumb broad girlfriend to move in with so it's going to be pretty hard going if i'm on my own.

I was looking at studio apartments and a lot seem to be for students, whats the deal with these? Is there any legalities involved that they must be a student? I mean, if they're paying the rent, who cares?

Or is student accommodation something set up via grants etc. specifically made cheaper so students can live closer to their uni which only students can live in Thinking
I assume that's the case, in which I wouldn't feel right about conning some student accommodation...

Seems all houses etc. come in about £500 a month basic rent, I make not much over a grand a month so could afford with some cutbacks on gadgets and goodies, but would be much better with a room-mate. Problem is, my mates are bums! They like living at home on the cheap and most only work a couple of days a week Rolling Eyes

I don't see how people can have no motivation to move out, I feel like a sadact still living with my parents and my room is so fucking small since we moved it's grinding on me. I want my double bed back D:

I have moved out before to a flat in town when I was with the long-term ex, but that was £750 basic rent so took the piss really!

It's difficult in not knowing where i'll be with work 6 months down the line either as i'm a temp on a sort of rolling contract Thinking

Dunno, any advice with moving out guys?
How about living with strangers?

Wouldn't fancy having some chinese bloke stand and shit all over the toilet seat like some of the horror stories i've heard on here! Sick

The student house thing.

Its been a while since I was a student (think the 90s)

Its something to do with council tax. Students don't pay council tax. But only if all the people in the house are students.

Why not look to be a lodger or something? Granted you might wake up one night hearing a fapping sound open your eyes and see him jerking off onto your face or sommat. But Clanger has some good lodgering experience. I've had some OK living like that as well.

Hmm I see, come to think of it I did know some students that let their girlfriend move in who then only paid council tax Thinking

Lodging eh, thing is I want to live locally and comfortably, I don't want to worry about sharing a house with people with things like smoking, and it stinks the place out Rolling Eyes I also like playing music etc, which obviously i'm conscientious of other people in the house (After living with parents you gotta be Laughing )
Also wouldnt want to live with major tramps who leave mess everywhere and pots and expect everyone else to clean them

My parents had suggested council houses to which I basically said I don't want to be a scumbag and offended them,, I think council houses are for people who actually need them and have no other choice, and I DO NOT want to be anywhere near a council house estate after the experience of my childhood Thumbs Down

Hmm, need more friends Laughing

Not all council places are in sucky areas you know.

You'd very likely have no chance of a council place.
They do have a bidding system thing these days though so who knows.
Council houses used to be the norm for everyday folk ('til the tories sold them off).

Cardiff Council used to have a hard-to-let list that was open to all as no buggar wanted the areas they were in.

Why lodge with strangers when you get the same deal but more familiar at home?

Bedsits
Caravan Park?
School caretaker? need a change of job there though Smile

I think you need to clarify yourself over that comment as it's offending me......are you suggesting everyone who lives in a council house is scum? If so, you can just about go & ram yourself hard up the poo pipe Confused .

Nah, I grew up in council houses as I said, but you can't possibly say that most council estates aren't rough I had so many pushbikes stolen, our dogs nicked and all sorts Rolling Eyes

Of course not ALL of them are scum, i've got family in them etc. But MOST of them, yeah, in my experience.
That's what I thought about them as well with the bidding, I think my rents are just stuck in the past, they even said that "that's how people get started, in council houses!" Yeah if you've got kids and nowhere else to go...
Council houses are for people who need them anyway, I can just about afford to live alone if I had to, I just don't want to be empty pocketed every month Thumbs Down

Apologies if I caused offense, but tape your nipples up so they don't get so sore next time

Definitely look into lodging, maybe post some adverts "Single 22 year old male, fit, attractive, seeks broad minded mature landlady with flexible approach to rent."

Dont rule out a house share. I lived in a house of students (i was working full time), it was a very relaxed house and I've never had a better social life. The rent etc was as cheap as you will find, and there isn't much to spend money on as most furniture is shared. Granted I knew everyone else who lived there prior to moving in, but I loved it.

Where even to start?
a) Don't hide under his bed
b) 'he's a dumb fuck and annoying as hell' - mates are not made of this... Laughing

If you do your homework, you can usually work out the best sort of places to lodge in, it does take a bit of time working out what's best for you...you basically need to work out what compromises you would be happy to make...and then set up a profile online - a place like Spareroom.com is a good site as any.

Then look through other people's profiles.

I would suggest (after my vast years of lodging experience), to find someone who wants you to share their place because they would like a bit of company, or to feed their cat when they are out...that sort of arrangement, rather than they need you there for the money.

You need to ask specific questions.
- will you be able to sit in the lounge (are you living in the whole house, or will you be asked to stay in your room)
- how often are they in (Cabin crew can be great to share with but also really awful - depending on their stance on noise)

Actually I have made some fab friends from being in house shares...and have been invited to some great parties and hosted some great parties too. Thumbs Up

Depending on whether you were happy to move elsewhere, I have a room you can have for a mere £200 a month, you get a shared shower, a kitchen and a private (obv) bedroom. Interwebs access and a key.

Simple, basic but there Thumbs Up

LOL if I caught my flatmate wanking, I would lol all the way to the camera, all the way back..take photos and post them here Laughing

I've seen far worse than a guy tossing himself off, christ its apparently natural. I see swarms of make up covered chocolate drops outside my window most nights going out with short skirts n stuff, I'd rather watch a guy wank Laughing

Although if I was in charge of Paddy's finances, I'd suggest £375pcm all in, no bills.

I was checking out some house sharing sites and a nice one has come up in Leicester, the guy seems like a decent chap and is only asking for £60pw with all bills included (and internet!)

Worries about house sharing:
Sharing a bathroom/toilet - Coming around to the idea, depending on the housemates, don't feel comfortable knowing some grotbag might be using my razors on his asshole when i'm not looking

Noise - I don't know if they'll be sound nazis or loud as fuck themselves, i'm all for being considerate and wearing headphones, but come friday night I should be allowed to enjoy myself with some audible fun/ladies

Dunno, there's nothing you guys can really tell me i'll have to speak to the guy, he asked if I wanted to view it which I did want to, but my GOD DAMN BIKE STILL ISNT FIXED.

Garage is now saying next week sometime ffs, they said that last week and now I NEED it for the new site i'm working at from monday.
Grr.

well with all due respect, even if i was house sharing with mates (which i basically did. i had a 3 bedroom bungalow and left the back doors open for mates to come n go as alot of them where in unstable family's) i kept my personal "bathing and grooming" items in my bedroom and left a pack of disposable cheap stuff (soaps, mini body wash's, razors, shaving cream, you know, the basic stuff) in the bathroom for people to use if they needed to clean up for what ever reason.

course then my landlord found out, wasnt best pleased and kicked me the fook out despite keeping the place spik and span (except for that fire extinguisher that got let off in the shed.....mwahahaha)

(P.S to the dude that said about the annoying as fuck mate, my statement above, THATS what mates do! not annoy the fuck outta each other)

Another Thumbs Up for house sharing, I'm by far the worst for clearing up in this place, and I'm not that bad really. Seen lots of people come and go in the three and a half years I've been here, not had any real bad experiences though. (One time I forgot my keys, the guy who opened the door had a 6 inch hunting knife in his hand hidden behind the door, was obviously expecting somebody unfriendly!. That's about the worst that's happened!).

Do it, you (probably) wont regret it.

If I'm paying my rates then I'll damn well wank as much as I please, and to be honest if in 10 years of friendship the worst you've seen of him is him wanking then you weren't as good mates as you thought.

Yeah I didn't really get that... I've slept on my friends floor and heard him wanking in his bed I really didn't care, long as i dont have to sniff it, look at it, or name it, it's fine.

Handy hearing others experiences of house sharing, seems a good move. Either that or settling with some dumb broad Thumbs Down
