Hi just wondering if anyone can offer their experiences with this bike at all?
Looking at buying a semi-retro type nakedish thing and having loooked at the basic specs of these they seem to be a better bet than the Bandit1200/XJR1300/GSX1400 type things and would seem to be somewhere near the top of the pile performance-wise for their category. I also think the R version with the Lawson-esque headlamp cowl really looks the part.
2.5k for an 2003 example about right?

They look nice in an old way, I'd prefer a round light to the square but seems the look you are going for.

yanto had one I think or is selling one... looks great and goes quick Laughing got more power than my GSXR

The only bad thing about it I know is its fuel consumption. I'd take it, I'm not a traveller anyway, so the fuel consumption wouldn't bother me Laughing

I like the look of em. I'd stay away from the earlier models due to the six-pot Tokico brakes - think the later ones got 4-pot Tokico's or Nissins.

I heard that about the brakes.
I think the attractive thing is that its basically in the retro naked category but much has more go than a lot of them, its a retuned zzr1100 engine I heard with oodles of torque and a 155mph top end which sounds fun.

I have the ZRX1100, there were only a few minor changes (apart from obvious hike in displacement) between it and the ZRX1200.

As far as the brakes go, you can bolt a pair of 4 pot Nissin calipers from a Bandit 1200 straight on, all you need to do is get a new banjo bolt as the thread pitch is 0.25mm different. They're much much better and I managed to get a pair of the 4 pot calipers in great condition for £40.

I love my ZRX (as I say every time anyone makes a thread about them!!) as I wanted something with sportsbike power but without the hunched riding position. It's a bit of a handful in really tight twisty stuff when you're going fast but I like to think of it as character and watching those sportsbikes bouncing around in your mirrors on the Welsh B roads is quite funny Laughing

I've put over 30,000 miles on mine (it's now just done over 42,000 miles) and the only things I've had to replace are consumables. I am not a very mechanically sympathetic person so I think that it's lasted this long without issue is great.

Apparently the 11's handled marginally better than the 12's but obviously the 12's got a bit more torque and power. If it's not fast enough for you then there's plenty of easy tuning options such as a new pipe, filters and jetting to suit which releases around 10-15bhp and ZZR1200 cams slot straight in and give it a good old power kick.

the very best fuel consumption I ever had was just a shade over 60mpg but that was commuting 20 miles a day without exceeding 30mph. If you thrash it it drinks petrol rather quickly and I think that a normal riding average fuel consumption would be around the high 30's/low 40's mpg.

generally they're owned by the more mature rider so they're not all as neglected as mine and there's plenty of aftermarket parts available to add as much tackiness/subtleness as you like.

There's lots and lots and lots of info here:

But if you sign up make sure you introduce yourself or they get a bit cagey. After you've made 20 posts you'll be able to access all the maintenance and mods sections of the forum and there's a pretty active buy/sell section that seems to have bikes popping up all the time.

Gpz1100s uses pretty much the same motor, a zzr1100 based motor with a side draught head.

Pulls like a train.

A mate has a ZRX1200. He love it. He says the handling is a bit sloppy compared to modern bikes if you are pushing hard in the corners but, he never seems to have that much trouble keeping up with most sports bikes.

A bit of a cult bike and the ZRX owners club is very active.

Head gaskets on the 12, and steel exhaust downpipes, both can go.

Whats wrong with the 6pots? Mine have worked just fine for the past 100,000 miles.

Never heard of 12 blowing a head gasket.. & there's 8500+ members in the owners club...
The exhausts on the US versions are painted stainless...

As for fuel, mine gets 45mpg (US) during the week..... & 35mpg at weekends for some reason.. Cool

Look at my sig. Spent a good few days replacing the H gasket, and they aint cheap. Seems like the overbore on the 12 takes the gasket too near the edge. From what I have gathered, not that uncommon. The steel pipes do what steel does..... rust!

What overbore on the 1200? They use a completely different cylinder block to the 1100... & 1100's use steel liners, 1200's are plated. Wink
