Hello all

Here begins a new mission - to get this 30+ year old Honda CB125TDC back on the road to replace my rattling 11 plate Kymco Pulsar 125...

As some of you may or may not of seen from the other posts on this forum I got this rather tired bike for the fair price of £50! It's a 1982 Honda CB125TDC Super Dream.

I've always wanted a bike which is from this era. I've had over 35 bikes now but never have i owned a really nice old retro bike... so when this popped up I just had to get it! Granted it's not very easy on the eyes at the moment its got a really bad paint job and a dent in the tank but for its age I think its not too bad at all.

So here we go then! So far I have removed the twin pipes (original Honda exhausts which is nice) and fitted new gaskets all around I also put new plugs and new oil in the bike, pumped the tyres up, lubed the chain and all the other usual things you would do with a new-to-you, old bike.

Sadly my camera wasn't present when I did all this so missed out on this part of the "project" but from here onwards I will be documenting everything.

I've got plans to get at the bike this week and check the valve clearances, tighten all the bolts up from back to front, get the front calliper off and clean it up (not sure if it needs it yet but we shall see..) the list goes on and on...

Main issue at the moment is some previous owner (total doughnut) has removed the air filters and covers... So I'm currently trying to source these.

Some pictures of the bike:

Look's like i'm gonna pop your comment cherry.

Look like it's going to be a good project. Does the thing function mechanicaly (more or less)? When was it last on the road? Whats your budget and just how much bodgeing are you going to be doing.

Details, details, details

Looks fairly good tbh.

Don't worry about the paint job, a bike that age and calibre is going to have been re-painted by the previous owner at some point.

Have fun.

Why thank you kind sir. Laughing

It does indeed function well mechanically I have actually ridden it briefly (on private land & yes I know, slapped hands for using it without filters. Mad ) Gear changes are smooth, no popping out of gear. Clutch is fantastic although will need some adjustment to make it how I like it.

Starts flawlessly and runs very well It's a little tappy but I think that's just me being used to a nice new(ish) 11 plate engine and not a 30+ year old one Embarassed Certainly no sinister sounds coming from the engine at all.

Does smoke a bit BUT it's not blue smoke so I'm hoping its due to the fact its been sat for awhile. When you run it and then leave it standing smoke comes out of the twin pipes so I presume theirs loads of crap to be burnt off inside the pipes. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

That's a good question, all i know is that it was brought to the garage where i got it from to have an MOT they looked at it and said he would be better off with a new bike and so he bought one and left them with the bike + V5. So the time it spent laid up previous to this I'm not entirely sure.

Budget is slim and none Laughing I'm currently off on sick at the moment so money is tight. As for bodges... I don't really do them as they always tend to bite me in the ass in the end. Embarassed Laughing But that being said if i have no other option...

Off down the garage now to do some work, shall be good fun! Will update later. Thumbs Up Mr. Green

So today I began the mission to get this little beast road worthy again.

I have....

Drained oil again and removed crank case to get at the clutch area where the oil strainer is (which was clogged to hell!)
Checked and ajusted the valve clearances (the bike no longer taps!!! Smile )
Got given a rev counter cable (thanks Dan!) and fitted that
Lubed the chain again
Took both carbs off and cleaned them out completely
Sourced some air filter covers!

Heres the pics:

New rev counter:

Bike sat ready, waiting for the day ahead:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/2.jpg

Fitting the new rev counter cable:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/3.jpg

Healthy vs dead cables:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/5.jpg

Beginning to take the carbs off the bike... here you see the air boxes without any covers or filters Sad

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/4.jpg

Stripped all that down and got the carbs off ready to be stripped down and cleaned:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/6.jpg

Carbs off:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/7.jpg

Float bowls off, quite a build up of crud in the bottom:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/8.jpg

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/9.jpg

Jets removed and cleaned:

Rock oil carb clean going to work on my carbs:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/11.jpg

Once all cleaned (sorry forgot to take pictures of them clean) I began to refit them:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/13.jpg

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/14.jpg

All fitted and secured, ran the bike and it was running perfectly:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/16.jpg

Next up, remove the oil strainer and clean it as I'm told these get covered in crud all the time:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/17.jpg

Oil drained and clutch cover off:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/18.jpg

At the bottom you can see the oil strainer waiting for a good clean:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/19.jpg

Removed and there we go! Surprise surprise its clogged with junk!

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/20.jpg

Cleaned that up nicely and put it back in place, then put the clutch cover back on:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/21.jpg

Yet more chain lube on the chain:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/22.jpg

Lubed nicely:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/23.jpg

Next up, Valve clearances:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/24.jpg

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/25.jpg

There were abit out so i adjusted them accordingly, put the cam cover back on and tried it out:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/26.jpg

It ran even better and has now lost its tappy sound. the engine sounds sweet as a nut now!

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/27.jpg

Next up I had a friend get in touch that ironically had another friend with 2 Honda CB125T's in his garden! Needless to say I swiftly went with him to this aladdins cave to source my much needed air filter box covers!

When i got there... well... what a mess! haha:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/28.jpg

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/29.jpg

Still main thing was, one of them had the correct covers i so desperately needed:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/30.jpg

Now removed and ready to go on my bike along with brand new air filters:

https://www.louiseredknapp.eu/jason/projects/cb125t/31.jpg

All in all a pretty productive day! Very Happy

Things to do tomorrow:

Order new air filters & put new filter covers on the bike
Carb balance
Decide if I want the black tank off the scrapper in the garden Rolling Eyes Laughing

You be lubing the chain wrong Embarassed

You need to spray it in the inside of the chain (lower run) so that when it spins it isn't spitting the lube off the chain but pulling it all through the chain.

Don't worry I did Smile I just didn't take a picture of that part. I did both the top and bottom of the chain as well as both sides. Laughing Probably overkill but the chain was dry as hell when I first got it so I thought I'd go to town on it!

Fitted the air filter covers today and ordered some new air filters Thumbs Up Mr. Green Also did a carb balance. The bike is running really really well now!
