https://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4325920/249mph-grandad-sets-new-motorbike-speed-record-aged-61.html

Quote:

Fearless Mike, who runs his own motorbike business, made his record attempt on a modified Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa at Elvington airstrip, North Yorks.

He reckons that he spent around £25,000 on his customised bike, including bolting on a huge turbo-charger giving it 530bhp — more horsepower than a Ferrari F430. He beat 35 rivals at the speed trial.

The grandfather-of-two, from Plymouth, Devon, said: “The next closest to me was 17mph slower — not bad for an old man.

“It is very exciting but I didn’t find it scary at all.

“I have been riding motorbikes since I was 16 — I’ve grown up with speed.”

First person I thought of was Pete, except he's not called Pete.

It's not me, though my name is actually Pete - dunno why anyone would think it isn't...

I've met Mike several times at top-speed meets and you'll not find a more understated and modest person who just gets on and does the business. He's probably done more 200mph+ runs on a bike than any other person in the U.K.

He used to have a mental-quick ZX12-R and you wouldn't give it a second glance, until it went past you the wrong side of 200. I bet there are a lot of people who'd like to know how he got that ZX12-R going so well on all-motor, he's put many a turbo bike to shame Smile

Fair play to him for the 249, he properly deserves it.

Nope, this is Mike. sold his business (3 shops) to George White's a couple of years ago.
Got shafted by them and managed to restart his Plymouth shop, having had to come out of retirement.
Always looking out for the little guy.
Fair play to him Thumbs Up

A few less pies and he would have made the 250. Well played granddad!
