hey there i am the owner of a kawasaki er6-n, which is currently in Imperia (in the north of italy).

however it doesnt have mot, tax or insurance, so i am unable to ride it back to the uk.

does anybody have any experience in transporting bikes within europe? or know of any companies i could speak to with regards to this?

or on the very slim chance that anyone happens to be driving a van back from italy to the UK with space enough for a bike? haha.

any help or advice would be much appreciated

Regards, Sam

Is it registered as an Italian bike? If so, simply ride it back and register it with DVLA in due course.

iirc, you've technically got 6 months to do so (but good luck to anyone trying to catch you!).

No, it's an English bike. I don't wish to ride the bike all the way back to the uk without Insurance. For obvious reasons.

Haha, does anyone pay attention to what I wrote? It has no tax or mot, so I can't insure it... I'm just looking for ways to transport it back. If it was a simple as riding it to the uk then I would have

You can insure a bike without tax and MOT.
You can then legally ride it to a pre-booked MoT test appointment within the UK.
Then you can go to the local PO, tax it, and ride away smiling.

On getting the bike from Italy to the UK - I suppose that's the issue.
It would be interesting to know whether or not you could legally ride across Europe for that 'pre-booked appointment'. May be pushing the bounds of reason.

Ok cheers, that's more helpful. So it might be possible to insure it temporarily for a weekend to ride it back?

No 'temporarily' about it - you can insure a bike without Tax and MoT. As far as I'm aware insurers don't even ask.

You need an MoT and Insurance cert to actually tax the bike.

I guess you could cancel it after you get it in the garage back home.

The part I'm wondering about is riding home from Italy without tax/MoT.

In the UK it is perfectly legal to ride a bike from Penzance to Inverness for a pre-booked MoT appointment, as long as you're insured. The authorities may question it if a closer test centre is available, I'm not sure it's ever been contested.

The question is then, how do those entitlements transfer to European countries (is it legitimate to book an MoT appointment in Kent and get it sorted as soon as the ferry gets back in, for example). I'm no law expert, someone else on the forum may be better placed to advise.

Ok gotcha. I was thinking that having no Mot might void the insurance. But that's good. I'm not too concerned with the ride through France, I don't think they'd get involved in any of that

It's the 'pre-booked' part that's important. You should have some sort of invoice or a phone number to call so that you can show law enforcement if asked.

If you just ride to an MoT station and they have no knowledge that you're coming, then yes, your insurance may well be void.
