OK, long story but I will try and summarise it.

During the winter I didnt use my bike for a month. When I tried to ride it again, it would only run on 1 cyclinder and the rev counter didnt work. Dont know what the problem way but after my having it in bits numerous times, it decided to work and has worked ever since.

I serviced the bike last week and since then it hasn't been feeling right. Took it for a long ride to the seaside in the hot weather and when I stopped for something to eat the bike started to idle erratically and went down to 1K. Decided to take it home and the exhaust started popping and had little power in low revs, but was fine at really high revs.

Took it out today and the oil light came on, so stopped; checked the oil and there was plenty in it.

It feels like it is running on 1 cyclinder (like in the winter but dont know if this is the same problem or not - thats why I mentioned that other problem). But dont know if it is.

The bike is a Deauville 650 with 102,000 miles on it.

Any ideas (helpful or not will be much appreciated).

P.S. - I should also mention that my airbox is cracked but I have taped it together. This was months ago that this happened so dont know if it is linked to the current problem (but that is the only part that I know of that is broken so just thought I'd mention that too).

I don't know too much about the Deauville, but is the rev counter fed from the ECU? If so, you could have an electrical problem - possibly in one of the connectors, in or around the ECU.

I'm assuming you have already checked the spark plugs and air filter, HT cables and battery?

The rev counter works now. I think that was a different problem altogether - but just happened to be there at the same time as the other problem so please dont let that put you off diagnosing the correct problem.

The rev counter worked off the rear coil and one of the wires had come loose.

Didn't check them this time around because I am more concerned about the oil light. Dont think it is the same problem as the winter but has similar symptoms.

Have you checked the coils? Made sure there's a strong spark at each plug? IMHO symptoms may suggest this if one coil per cylinder and one not working 100%.

HTH Thumbs Up

Edit: I meant to ask if it was driven separately.

Have you looked at the plugs to see if they are burning the same? If they're not, this should at least identify which cylinder is dodgy, then you could start tracing back to the coil and ECU.

Make sure the inside of the plug caps are clean and the HT leads are clean and in good condition, and not arcing to earth.

Chect the HT and LT sides of the coil, and check for physical damage and signs of arcing where the HT cable connects etc.

I guess it could be a dirty carb problem, but the electrics are quick and easy to check.

Regarding the oil light. Did it come on whilst the bike was ticking over erratically? If so that's not a major problem, when the choke was sticking on my Africa Twin (same basic engine) the tickover went so low the oil light would come on. That bike went on to go round the clock and then quite a bit more.

Check the spade terminals on both coils, if they go green with corrosion it really makes the output of the coil drop. A scrape with a file or scalpel blade will help. I would imagine one of your coils gives info to the rev counter.

Is your bike carbed rather than fuel injected? Chokes and associated cables are notorious for sticking. This affects slow speed running, especially in warm weather.
