This is the roundabout at the A418/M40 junction near Oxford:

https://www.rt.uk.eu.org/~river/files/roundabout.jpeg

I approach from the left side (A418). The first exit is actually the M40 exit slip road (no entry) and the second exit is a golf club (no one goes there), so the only exits that matter are the 3rd (A418) and 4th (M40). There are two lanes going into the roundabout. I am taking the 3rd exit.

Although I would usually be in the right lane for an exit that far round, since the first two exits are non-exits, the only sensible way to do it seems to be using the left lane for the A418 (marked in blue), and the right lane for the M40 (marked in red).

The problem is, drivers often approach in the right lane and take the A418 exit, which creates something of a conflict when we both get there at the same time.

What is the right (i.e., safest) thing to do here?

I always use the left lane. It's more dangerous going the other direction where at the next roundabout people seem to just grab a lane and hope for the best.

Given that it's exiting to a single lane, I'd be inclined to use the left lane. However, I would second AB's advice. Filter to the front, use both lanes like a boss.

Enter on the left lane then cut in to the right at the top of the round-about, try and get your knee down on the chevrons on the inside and the get a handful on the way out. That's the fun way of doing it Wink
