Hello all - A foreign business contact has asked me to buy 5 ex-demo bikes for export from a BMW dealer, a mix of models. I've never done anything like this before (he's not actually a motorbiking contact, and I'm not in the trade!), any ideas on what kind of discount I should look to get vs. list? Thanks for any advice!

Two posts, one about shipping bikes to your "cousin" in Australia, one about buying bikes for Nardo in Elbonia. For someone who's not in the bike export trade, you certainly do a good job of hiding it.

If you want meaningful advice, you'll want to give some more information. Which models (and why BMWs?), do they have to be ex-demo or just pre-registered, where does Nardo live, and why does he reckon that the UK is his cheapest source of bikes?

IIRC, doing £30K of business in a year means that HRMC will consider you to be "in the trade" regardless of your feelings on the matter.

Right then, well you've come to the right place - I'll see you right. For ex-demo you want to be looking at maybe 20-25% above list price because someone else has done you the service of running them in and had the initial oil-change performed, corrected any niggles etc.

For 20% above list I'll source you as many ex-demo bikes as you like.

Very Happy Cheers Angry, very generous offer!

Well, I'm not in the trade, but I do have a VAT registered company to do the deal through - and if I was, would I be on forums asking these fairly basic questions?! TBH, I don't really use forums, (prefer to spend my time on the road Wink), so apologies if I've broken some kind of ettiquette!

Models are still tbc, but I think most likely to be a two S1000RR Sports, a G650, and two K1300s. (Extremely back of the envelope) that would be in the order of about £52k list for ex-demo?

If you don't know the book value for them, should you really be buying fifty-plus grandsworth of bikes for resale?

Fair point. Problem is, how do you "find" the book value? Google is not very helpful...

Always thought Glass's guide was the industry standard, only really available to the trade (although they are online)
For retail price then dealer site as benchmark.
For trade price then use your best guess at how much dealer markup is.

I wouldn't recommend it for a business, but I simply check ended listings in fleabay. That should give a ball-park figure.

Ah, there it is. Cheers guys, v helpful. I'd checked Parkers (cars only), but didn't know about Glass. Spoke to them and at £189 p.a., def worth the investment if this turns into a real business (paper books only, but apparently they're going online later in the year).

Off the back of this I just managed to get some info from "the Green guide", so have a good steer now (pun intended), thanks for the advice.

Let me guess.... He's going to send you a cheque and it's going to be for more than the cost....
And then ask for you to return the extra after taking a cut Rolling Eyes
