Recently, I've found myself doing many good deeds whilst on my travels. Some guy pulled up next to me whilst I was having a smoke and asked for directions and he couldn't work out where I was telling him to go, so I showed him and he followed me a good 15 miles to where it was.

Another was a few weeks after that, some guy pulled up an asked directions to somewhere about 4 miles from my house so I took him as well.

Most recently was on Friday night. Was coming back from town and decided to take the scenic route home and as I came round the last corner to go up the road to my house, there was a guy at the side of the road messing about at the back wheel of his bike. So I pulled up and it's dome dude on a Y Reg Kawasaki 125 Eliminator. He tells me the chain slipped off as he came round the corner, which upon inspection, it had slipped behind the back sprocket.

It was going dark at this point and after 20 odd minutes of pissing around trying to get the chain back on, it wasn't having it. I asked him did he have break down recovery, to which he replied, no. I asked him if he had a van or could get someone to pick it up in one, to which he replied, no. So at this point, he phoned his wife an asked her to come in the people carrier to see if we could get it in. She was coming from a good 30 miles away where he lived so I said, push the bike up to the top of this hill to my house because if your wife comes an you can't get it in, you're screwed then.

So he pushed it up, had a brew with the guy whilst his wife came, she turned up and the people carrier was more like a small van. I told him he can leave it in my garage and he could come pick it up whenever or I can get my mechanic to pick it up an sort it out for him.

The bike is still in my garage now...

So, do you ever stop for other bikers?

Interestingly, my mechanic said, even if he's driving past in the van where he could fit it in the back, if he's on his way home he will drive straight past them every time because he's had enough of fixing them all day. Fair point, I don't think I could though, I'm one of them people who would do anything for anyone if they asked or needed help.

Never stopped yet, but I suppose I only would if they seemed desperate, I couldn't really help if it were a mechanically problem Laughing

Two guys once stopped to help my brother when his clutch cable came undone (Aprilia build quality for ya Laughing ) and I was on my old scooter at the time. He had it sorted himself but they stopped anyway to help Thumbs Up I was a little unnerved at the time because I wasn't aware bikers were nice people, I just assume they were going to rob and murder us Laughing

rarely ever see bikes broken down in area's i can stop, for instance i saw a guy at the side of the motorway, i slowed down a bit but saw he was on his phone so knew he wasnt screwed.

while out on a ride we saw a bunch of people at the side of the road looking down a ditch to the side and we pulled over to see a bike cleanly spread over a distnace of 20-30 odd metres in a million peices, guy was fine (he had fallen off way before then) so we were on our way.

only time iv'e stopped and got off the bike to help someone was to help an old guy in a wheelchair get off the pavement as the drain cover there had collapsed and then helped him back on the pavement a bit further down, probobly scared the shit out of him at first with my one peice and black visor still on lol.

although when i ran out of petrol had so many people asking if i needed help, near enough every biker who went past (except cruisers for some reason) and was offered lifts to a petrol station but i already had a friend coming along with more petrol.

guess it depends on the situation, if the person is in desperate need of help he will make it obvious

Yes i have stopped more times than i can count on my un-mutated fingers.

Given quite a few lifts down the road for petrol etc... lent the phone a few times.

That reminds me a little while back some guy was stopped by the side of the A40 on a DT125 with L plates looking pretty glum, he had run out of petrol, so i gave him a lift to the nearest garage where he brought a little plastic jerry can and petrol. As it transpired i think it was his first time on anything over a 125 and I proper ragged the ninja the couple of miles there and back none the wiser. Im pretty sure he had fun Laughing

I will slow down and look at biker to see if he/she needs help . If need be I will stop although I am not mechanically minded I can always run for fuel or lend a mobile.
I had stopped the other week as back box had fallen off bike Embarassed I was just re- attaching it when a car pulled up, it was a woman driver. She stopped to ask if I was ok and then proceeded to tell me she owned a VFR and a Fireblade Very Happy

I used to stop only to find out that they were having a little rest break. Now if it is very obvious I will. I just wish there was a universal sign for broken down or need help.

I always stop and see what I can do. Luckily enough these days I'm usually in the transit and I carry a bike ramp and straps in there in case of just such an instance.

Are the bikes always broken down and do the owners know you have helped them when you pick the bikes up?

I was stopped by the side of the road just outside Flitwick one time inspecting one of my tyres (had just had a new set put on, so I was doing a few heat cycles etc). Harley rider pulled up asking if I had broken down as he was carrying plenty of tools - explained I was just being a bit OCD and he went on his way.

Was a nice thing to do seeing as though I was a sports rider and generally don't get nods from the chopper/Harley guys!

Can i borrow £2500 please Laughing

I've never stopped and helped anybody because ... I've never came across a broken down motorcycle in my 3½ years of riding Shocked

I saw a scooter lad lying on the floor about a month ago, he had been clipped by a car. I was on the other side of a 3 lane busy road with a centre resevation, and it was rush hour. I got to the outside lane, and stopped to see if he was ok, but he got up and was walking about and their was plently of people helping him so I left it at that.

Lucky for you there is!!!

Helmet next to the rear wheel is the motorcycle distress signal. Now althought this signal is pretty old, no-one here yet posted it. This leads me to believe that maybe no-one knows it these days??? Still if broken down it won't hurt to try!

I normally stop for bikers looking lost or confused. Once some guy on L's was parked up alone in a bus stop. Turned out he was with some training company and his tutor had fucked off to go chase down some lost kid.

Another guy was on a beemer and struggling to find a pub in my town after riding from upcountry. I just led him to the pub as it was 2 mins away.

Other times my MZ had broken down in st austell, as I was looking for a shop with tools in. A landy should turn up with none other than a member of the cornish MZ club who happily lend me some of his tools on trust. (Yes I did return them at a later date.....)

So yes I would say that I stop and have been stopped for so I all works out in the end.

Karma eh?

I once stopped for a spilled bosozoku(road gang) guy and asked "Are you ok?" Then he replied "Yes I'm fine thank you" in a very polite way, it was really funny Laughing .
I was stopped by riders when I slipped on icy mountain road on my CB400SF at night. 2 guys on suzuki grass tracker helped me raise my bike I really appreciated these guys.
(The next day I thought I need high grip tyres, went to a shop and fitted them, and slipped in front of the shop because of tyre wax Laughing )

I've heard of the helmet thing but don't think anyone does it anymore.

I found a boy on a moped with L plates crying on the M11 once. He'd taken the wrong turn at the Stansted junction and realised he shouldn't be on there. I rode with him on the hard shoulder to the nearest phone and rung the old bill to come and rescue him.

I rescued a 'born again' in a petrol station. His bike started okay, but kept mysteriously cutting out when he went to pull away. I explained that sidestand and clutch switches had appeared since he last rode and he lifted his sidestand and tried again.

Stopped for a pensioner couple who had broken down in their car and the poor old sod was trying to push it to a safe place with his wife still aboard. I pushed it for them and the cheeky bugger talked me into attempting a bump start. It did eventually work but I ended up miles away from my bike wheezing like a steam train.

Think the helmet thing is very much something the older end do. I stopped to help an old guy on an A10 and first thing I noticed was his helmet was in the road next to the back wheel.

Knowing how much helmets cost these days it's not somewhere you would just put it down so it acts as a great signal.

What goes around comes around. I'm still eternally grateful for that burly jeordie lad that gave my bike a push with his foot for a good 5 miles on the M1 when I was out of fuel... on the hard shoulder! I would have been proper shagged if he didn't do that since I was seeing my parents off at the airport. So I often stop and help folk out as much as I can, even if it's just accompanying them until their breakdown truck arrives. I guess when you're feeling buggered, just having a person you can talk to can make the time go by.

i find that being seen flying over your handlebars is always a well understood gesture of requiring help... Laughing

I havent yet come across anyone broken down, but i get the odd cager looking lost darting between lanes, though i do get some funny looks when i pull on my (now non running) Fz400 race rep, lift my chin bar and ask how i can help.... its as if people dont realise that bikers are probably one of the few civilian groups that band together for people in need...
