Hi,

I have a 2008 Honda S Wing 125 that has a frustrating starting problem.
I bought this second hand and it has spent its life outside with quite a lot of corrosion evident which may have a bearing on what Im saying.

My journeys are 60 miles each way so battery gets plenty of opportunity to recharge.

On trying to start, the starter motor will only turn over for 2 secs before the battery is drained too much, like its too hard to turn.
I bought a new battery thinking this was the reason but same with brand new battery.

Im thinking that there is too much resistance for the motor to overcome or maybe a poor earth somewhere.
Its almost as if the cylinder is hydraulically locked and it can't turn over. Do these bikes have a form of decompresser built in?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Thank you!!

can be a worn stater motor, contact brushes may be knackered, how many miles?

Could be poor earth like you mentioned, easiest bit to check is to power the starter motor directly and see if that turns over any better

Its only done 5,000 miles so hopefully not too worn.

Sounds like best solution might be to strip all the covers off, remove the starter motor from the engagement and see how it turns over in a free state.

Thanks for the reply.

You may be charging the battery, but is it keeping the charge?

Have you got a voltmeter?

Set it across the battery reading volts, when the bike has been stood overnight, and check the voltage before starting, during cranking, and hopefully, when running.

Should be around 12.8v pre start, no lower than about 9.6 during cranking, peaking at around 14.6, dropping to 13.8ish when running for a few minutes.
