Can anyone confirm that if i can smell petrol in my gear box oil that the crank seals are gone ?
I was doing a oil change earlyer today on my dt125r an thought the oil looked strange colour so had a smell, and theres a strong smell of petrol

I seam to remember this happening to a rd125lc i had years ago, If the seals are gone would this make the engine run any different ?
Also will this mean the bearings are on there way out to ?

Any thoughts on this would be great,

I would say that if you could smell petrol in the gearbox oil, it would rather be an engine cover gasket. If i'm right, when the engine is running it should be smoking more than usual.

If it happened to be a crank seal, you would lack crank compression, therefore it would run pretty crappy and would struggle to keep going.

Someone on this forum told me to check if crank seals were gone, you could test it by putting a smoking splint next to the crank seal while it's running, and the smoke would be going inside the seals. You could also spray a highly explosive spray in the seal while it's running on idle and it would rev higher.
Giving these two methods a second thought, it kinda seems impossible, as the seals are covered by either the magneto, or stator, or another engine cover. This seems to be the case on my KE125 engine.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you're doing Thumbs Up

Yeah just change them. You will have to separate the engine covers anyways, which will probably result in you having to change the engine cover gasket. It shouldnt take you tooo long, i'd say 4-5 hours average, but it also depends on how many things you need to take off + disconnect to get the engine by itself.
Cheers
