Going to pick up my new bike today, a ZX6 J1 2000, what are the main things I should check on this model other than the usual things?

Couple of things from my own experience I would suggest:

Are the wheels flaking? These bikes are notorious, mine was slight when i bought it and now hardly any paint left on the front wheel :/ Now getting them re-sprayed.

Mileage and service history. Bear in mine at 15K they are due for a valve clearance check. Although some would argue with some bikes you could probably leave it off- from what i heard the kawasaki's normally need the adjustment at this stage.

I've got a 2001 J2 and I love it, never given me any problems in a year of owning it and riding it hard. I think so long as they are looked after and oil changed regularly they are pretty reliable.

Let me know if you got any more questions.

What's the mileage and asking price etc? If you don't mind me asking! Twisted Evil

check that the compression damping force adjuster screws at the bottom of the forks aren't seized up as this can be a timely/costly job to put right. These usually seize over time, also might be worth checking all the suspention setting screws, front and rear just to be safe.
Apart from that, just all the usaul really like for seals/ chain and sprocket condition/tyres etc. Sounds like your gonna be having some real good fun!

seized pots in the 6 pot calipers is common, the flakey wheels, fooked compression adjusters on front forks, leaking cam cover gasket. Great bikes loved my j1, still very capable bike and good midrange for a 600.

Ah yeah forgot about the brakes lol, if they havent been well loooked after and cleaned etc they will be seized, but not the hardest thing to put right, have a peek and see if you can see any rubber o rings sticking out of the pistons, not good, will need a rebuild, but then thought this was the case with most bikes.
Check for brake judder and alot of movement noise with the brake pads like a tapping noise, this means the discs are warped, not cheap for a new pair!

Ok so what everyone else says. And as its got a custom paint job then check for accident damage.. dints to frame, scratches on swingarm, damage to headstock ect.

With 10,000 on the clock, valve clearance should be fine, I just paid 350 quid for a valve service on a g2 I bought in feb, 13 needed shimming!

Oh and watch out for fork seals, someone told me they have a tendancy to go if ridden very hard or wheelied alot.

If you can, drop some/all of the oil and check for swarf. Common for the engines not to gain pressure after doing an oil change and fuck up the engine.

I don't want to piss in your paddling pool but for £2k I don't think I'd be buying a ZX6R J, especially as I presume you want to be doing more trackdays on it? I reckon there's better options for the money...

I know there are different options for that money but I love the paint job on this (audi white on black frame) and its decent mileage, 10 month MOT + a few other points that make me want it! Ive wanted a zx6 for about 4 years now so thought why not! I can always sell it on and upgrade next year anyway which is when I'm looking to have a dedicated track bike by.

I don't think the J really moved on much from the G so whilst the latter are a bargain at less than £1k once you double that budget I think you could get something a bit better as you're basically buying the same bike with different bodywork.

That said they're still good bikes and you won't be disappointed with it Thumbs Up

No major revisions but quite a few little things beneath the surface. When I looked at it in detail there was a lot more than what I expected.

For £2k I would have thought you could just about get a B1H which was a much bigger jump. Mind you, I haven't looked at prices much lately so maybe everything's gone up.

I believe they squeezed another 5ish BHP out of the engine moving from the G to J? Might be wrong but I’m sure I read that somewhere…it’s around 112 horses out the factory I believe.

B1H would be lush, but there’s no chance I could pick one up for near that price in good nick with low mileage, I need to be near the price of what I can sell my FZ for so the gap I need to cover isn’t stupid.

Can’t wait to pick it up later! Shame I can’t ride it on the road yet due to my insurance being c*nts and not allowing me to change my policy from the FZ to this until it ends on the 15th due to lack of NCB until then Sad riding it for the first time properly at Rockingham on Monday, it’s going to be interesting getting used to the sports position again after riding with motorcross renthals on my current bike for the past year!

I might get to see it if I can get my bike sorted before Monday, assuming Rockingham isn't booked out. I had planned to do this one but my bottom yoke snapped Brick Wall

Yeah do it! Drop me a PM if you do manage to get it sorted.

Rockingham isn't booked out yet but I just checked the weather and it's meant to be shite...Sad not sure what to do!

How shite is shite...is it meant to be raining? Trackdays in the wet can be fun, even with my totally unsuitable Racetecs on Laughing Not as much fun as in the dry though imo.

As in this shite... (see attachment)

I know it is fun in the wet still, I did my first ever track day at Mallory when it was absolutely pissing it down and still had a cracking day! A lot more fun when it’s dry I think personally though, I’m going to check the weather when I get paid on thursday and then decide I think! I can only afford to do one track day in June so thinking I might just wait until after I come back from Italy and do one mid/end of the month and hope for better weather.

Got a serious urge to get back on the track though Laughing

EDIT: Ignore the fact it says Sunday – the date is the 4th it’s just metcheck being a spaz.

Might do Rockingham on the 16th or 17th instead, at least if I do the one on the 17th I will have the Saturday to get used to the ZX6 on the road!

Oh dear...sounds like you might be heading towards gradually losing all interest in riding on the road and pissing all your money up the wall doing trackdays Laughing

I think I’m pretty much there Laughing I have been getting frustrated on the road since my first track day and already have plans for a dedicated track bike for the start of next year and scraping the road bike (probably will get a cheap run around/pit bike for decent days to keep my eye in on the bike though).

I still commute on my ZX6R but I actually can't remember the last time I just took it out for fun Confused It just feels really boring now...it's a shame really.
