The ghetto bandit came to me in fairly poor state. Cosmetically shagged, slipping clutch, running like a bag of spanners banging about in a washing machine, it was not nice to ride nor was it nice to look at. However for the relatively little money it cost me it fulfilled my need for an everyday bike with the possibility of a project in the future. I had originally seen the bike when it'd been bought by a friend 5 years ago, it was in deep red, with matching polished/painted rims and had all the little tricks done like stage 3 Dynojet, ignition advancer, crank/cam breathers, cam to cam oilways, stubby exhaust and drag bars. It was in lovely nick and a very quick bike but my mate soon started fiddling with it, bits went on/off it every week, combined with him working away a lot, it gradually fell into disrepair and was consigned to the back of the garage to live a lonesome existence. Eventually he put it up for sale and I jumped on it...

https://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4724/dscf0955g.jpg

There was chockloads of potential there, GSX-R 600 K6 forks and yokes machined to fit the bandit headstock and bearings, K5 radial brakes and master cylinder, the ever potent and bulletproof 1200 Bandit motor, a lot of work already done... Just needs saving.

Roll on a few months and a 'new' bandit 600 is on the scene and doing a very good job of being soooooooo boring and reliable that I feel compelled to not spend any money on it at all. This is a first, and a good one, so on with the project!

https://img833.imageshack.us/img833/8667/dscf1121x.jpg

Still awake? Good...

First job was brakes, the fronts had gotten progressively worse since I had got the bike. I don't know why really, but they were shagged. I stripped and cleaned them, replaced the pads with dual carbon SBSs, re fitted the proper master cylinder with a drilled bracket and bled it all through with 5.1 fluid. Jesus, what a difference! Rock hard lever and when warmed up almost uncomfortable amounts of stoppage!

https://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7301/dscf1112n.jpg

Next was lights, the assembly it had come with wasn't even properly attached to the forks, meaning that adjusting the headlamp was a simple as slapping it upside the head whilst riding. Needed sorting so got some of the venerable 'dommy' headlights and a pair of huge brackets. Ordered up an airblade screen and fitted, voila! I can see at night. These are still a work in progress however, the brackets need chopping down and powder coating black, bike's got an overbite. Give it a clean and:

https://img189.imageshack.us/img189/574/dscf1107z.jpg

Next job was off to the local independent bike shop, I have a good relationship with them there as Ryan the owner's son is into his club racing and I mechanic for my mate Pete who also goes club racing. We do favours for each other, stripping/rebuilding after races whatever needs doing etc. An hour down there saw the carbs balanced and the engine mount bolts torqued up, last owner must have had the engine out of the frame and forgotten to tighten them up! Again, another improvement in ride quality (sorted out the 'bag of spanners' feeling anyway!) and I became further interested in the bike. Got to this point and just started enjoying riding it for the first time. It turned heads, was loud, fast and handled well. It also looked great from certain angles, much better than a bandit 12 had any right too.

https://img841.imageshack.us/img841/9415/ghettobiatch.jpg

^^ That one for example.

So I began looking for another way to go. Respray was on the cards at least, along with modified bodywork. I had refitted the bellypan as you can see a couple of pics up, originally just to see how it would look, but then left it on there as I liked it. It needed work desperately but I would get to that later. Carbon mudguard was on the list too, obviously a GSXR item would fit.

Then everything went hazy and I went a little left field and the bike ended up in a van heading towards Sussex to get a Garrett hybrid turbo fitted. It is due back in two and a half weeks a rather altered beast. Before it went I changed the rear wheel bearings and sprocket carrier bearings, reasoning that when it was tanking 200+ rwhp down it probably needed everything to be fresh. Whilst the work was being done I noticed excessive play in a few parts around the rear end, swingarm mainly. A bit of investigation revealed a worn shock linkage, and play in the swingarm bearings. The rear shock did not look too hot either, considering the front end, having a standard shock seemed a bit silly. So i began sourcing parts.

https://img827.imageshack.us/img827/1439/52779410150932776793485.jpg

There's a new heavy duty chain and sprockets, set of swingarm bearings, good condition shock linkage, probolt kit, probolt c&s nuts and a set of classic knuckle duster kidney plates for the frame for a bit more 'pazzaz' all ready to fit when it gets back. Not pictured is a full spec remote reservoir WP shock to replace the stocker. It as yet has not arrived.

I also ordered a new rear end for the bike. An A16 undertray with R1 style shotgun lights. Also got the full tail bodywork to experiment with, mine is shagged, most lugs broken off and fixtures missing. Started modding it today.

loosley described, I cut the 'patches' from the old lexan RC shell I had lying around. Used them to form the base for the filler to sit on. The MK1 bandit has two enormahuge grab rails on the back that fuck the bike cosmetically and I wanted to get rid of them. Once that was sorted and the glue was drying, I started working on the tail tidy. Got the plate mounted, then the assembly to the undertray then mounted the rear lights and the number plate light. Once that was done I went back to the tail fairings, sanded them down, filled the holes and then sanded them again. they are now ready for primer, then the satin black I want to use.

I shall update with further progress as and when it happens. I work 45-50 hour weeks so it'll be relatively slow. Thumbs Up

There may well be more boost. I can't resist ridiculous bikes.

Cheers tim. Thumbs Up

Shock arrived yesterday, pics this afternoon hopefully.

Was £200, looks nice and tarty and has three dials I can fiddle with that will no doubt destroy the handling of the bike. Gave it a bit of a clean and she's good to go. Now means I have a whole back end I can simply swap in when the bike comes back. Woop!

Just a little update on this. Panels are now primered and sanded to the point I am happy with them. Looking to get some decals so I can shoot the black, lay the decals and then satin laquer over them.

https://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1239/53966010150997307468485.jpg

https://img213.imageshack.us/img213/175/60232210150997306153485.jpg

Bike is still away at the shop, turns out the Gixxer front end conversion has brought the wheelbase down an inch and a half ( Shocked ) so the first standard fit bandit turbo system would not package behind the front wheel. This has resulted in the bike having a custom turbo setup more similar to a Hyabusa turbo with a separate wastegate and exhaust pipe to allow more flexibility in placement of components. The redesign has obviously delayed things a bit, with the turbo needing the internal wastegate blanked and then modifying for the external wastegate. It also required a change of turbo type with a shorter exhaust flange. I believe he said a turbo of that application would usually be found under the bonnet of a Nissan 200SX, so that sounds fun.

The clutch has been rebuilt mega heavy duty with barnett plates, stiffer springs and actuator springs and according to the guy when pulling 'is like the lever is attached to a 400kg weight', which sounds just about what my Buell clutch used to be like. Laughing

The chap said that I might want to consider an extended swingarm sooner than I thought, what with the short wheelbase and also to get the rear shock fitted with a 650-680lb spring. Stock they are roughly 500lb, so I may send the WP away for a service and fitment of a heavier spring.

Aside from that, got a full set of shock linkage bearings and spacers to fit on the linkage I have so that will be fresh and ready to bolt in when the bike gets back. Initial time for the conversion was 4 weeks, we are now in the 7th week Laughing .

Your clutch will still slip.

Sack off all the hd springs and buy a lockup.

Or if you've got a few quid spare, buy an 89-91 gsxr1100 clutch and fit that instead. Then fit a lockup as well.

Nearly there. The packaging required to fit the turbo behind the front wheel looks... Complex.

Just in case anyone was wondering how this was going.

I don't have time to do the bodywork at the moment, so just covered it in stickers. Laughing

Rwhp looks something like this:

Moderate boost for manageable road use and longevity:

https://img838.imageshack.us/img838/1645/54969010151088482543485.jpg

heavy boost for extended swingarm, parties and the such:

https://img845.imageshack.us/img845/2301/39117510151088490083485.jpg

Bike has had every chassis and wheel bearing renewed, new chain and sprockets, shock linkage rebuilt, tyres, new WP shock fitted (with reservoir rather classily strapped to the pillion peg Laughing ), lots of other bits I can't remember and has been mot'd.

Cheers guys, although in reality 210hp is actually roughly similar to the rwhp of a BMW S1000RR with an exhaust, engine management and a decent dyno tuned setup, the Beemer has traction control and a 16+ year march on development over the Bandit.

The Beemer would also not have nearly 160lb/ft of torque to deploy. Worth noting the wheelbase on my bandit is an inch and a half shorter than the BMW. Fun times.

This bike is brutal, every gear will pull the front up, even with the soft boost. Shaved a poorly routed oil pipe situated too close to the front wheel on a test ride last week, just waiting for a new stainless braided one to be made up with a smaller outer diameter. That should solve the problem. Space is so tight around the front of the bike now, it looks like there is loads of room around the turbo but in reality when the front wheel is in compression it will get close enough to foul anything even slightly proud of the turbo.

Are you keeping carbs or doing a FI conversion? I've heard carbs can be tricky with Turbo's from the incosistent air pressures

oh okay I see, I didn't know if the amount of fuel to air had to suddenly increase from air pressure increase, I didn't think it was anywhere near as linear.

Whats NA?

What's naturally aspirated? I've never been familiar with that, is that like without an airbox like velocity stacks and stuff?
