Hi guys.

The battery on my new ZX9R reads 12.6v but appears to be dead.

I was under the impression that 12.6v meant that it was charged/good.

The starter spins for a very short time before stopping and resorting to the clicking noise.

I've put it on charge just now, but just curious as to why it seems to be bad even though it's reading 12.6v.

Thanks for any help.

its needs to be tested under load, do the test again with the meter attach and i bet the volts drops quite rapidly to about 9 which is where its in need of replacement

The voltage drops to above 10v when under load. I've put it on the charger for now and hopefully that will sort it out.

12V battery are composed with 6 elements . one element is 2.2V at charging end , and 1.8V at discharging end . so 13.2V when fully charged and 10.8V fully discharged . you may mind about a loss of 5 to 15% with the age and the maintenance of the battery . in brief under 12.8 fully charged is not good !
at any battery charge when i disconnect from the charger , i check heath & voltage then i let it cool down for 2 to 4 hours , then check voltage again and if you've lost more than 0.1V it's not a good sign

the batt in my virago is on its way out. When i found out my reserve fuel didnt work i was cranking the engine over for about 25-30 seconds worth overall and it killed the battery. Charged it up again and its holding out as long as i run the bike at least once a week.
Some bikes have naff charging systems too, my bike for one.

Hi guys.

I have fully charged the battery on the 9r and I have just tried to start it and the starter starts slowing down very quickly and I am just getting a massive backfire.

Is there anything else I need to do (eg, is the engine flooded) apart from get a new battery?

Especially with always on headlights.
I've taken the headlight fuse out on mine when I wanted it to charge more through the day.

I think I do need a new battery.

It won't start off the button even though the starter motor turns. It will spin for a bit and then the bike will backfire loudly. The bike bump starts no problem first time.

It shows 14.50 to 14.55v at idle.

This went up to around 14.70v when I turned the throttle a bit. (not much, old person next door and bike is loud).

Bike bumps first time by dropping the clutch in 1st gear and pressing starter button at the same time.

Any chance you can post a video of the bike turning over on the starter?

Will see what I can do. It's a bit late now (for old people & backfiring) so will go and film in a car park or something.

When the bike does that (clicking) what voltage does the battery go down to exactly? I saw in one of your earlier posts you said doesnt go below 10volts was that correct?
If the battery checks out fine you need to move further down the line looking at the cables to the starter, if you are confident with a multimeter see this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV5wdGtP34o

Next time you get that clicking.

Hit the starter motor with something. Then try starting again.

My divvy used to do that and it was the starter motor sticking.

As to the battery. What milage do you do? and how long between rides.

As you siad could well be the alarm draining battery.

Exactly what my ZX9R did when in needed a new battery. New battery solved it.

Sounds a bit high to me. As above, sounds like Reg/Rec

thats ok, its when its doing 16v plus the reg/rec is blown and the bulbs start popping!

Edit: saw the video, its def the battery that has had it. Its should crank for a good minute or 2 before draining that flat!
