PostPosted: 10:56 - 11 Oct 2012    Post subject: QUESTIONS!..re ER6f, restriction, Insurance etc etc.... Reply with quote

Ok, so I'm going to look at a 2011 ER6F later.....

I'm on a restricted licence....so 2 questions -

1) If I end up buying it and riding it home (90 mins) and bin it, will my insurance be invalid as the bike isn't YET restricted?(Its not mine yet to restrict!)

2) Does the ER6F take well to restriction and where can I get one/what does it involve?

Thanks for any help guys.

It's a private sale. Looked on Ebay but couldn't see one. The other thing is, by the time I've looked over the bike, done the deal, paperwork etc, it wil be dark so not really ideal conditions to be fitting a restrictor kit.

Anyone know where else I can get one as a quick search on tinternet shows nothing really.

It should be good for restriction, ER's take it pretty decently from what I can say.
As for the kit itself, have a go at your local dealers, some of them may have some on stock.

Restriction consists of a screw in the throttle quadrant (there's a hole there for it) and a plug under the seat which alters the ECU.

Easy to do.

De-restriction instructions, just do it in reverse.

I may have the screw and the plug knocking arround at home but it's from a 2008 ER6F not 2011 so worth asking the dealer if it's different.

You may well end up fine, and even if you do have an accident, the insurer may not fully check your license re: restrictions etc., although they do normally look for any little window out of paying.

That said, the legality of it is that you will be riding otherwise than in accordance with your license, and so your insurance will technically not be valid either.

Yup, that's the offence.

Maybe. Does riding a 125 on a provisional with an undersized, damaged or missing L plate void your insurance? How about if you're out on DAS training and all legal except that your qualified DAS instructor isn't in "possession" of his DAS training certificate at the time, which is a condition of validating your entitlement? Is your insurance voided? You're a criminal? If not, why not?

I'd draw your attention to RTA 1988 151 (3) and (8).

Morally, you're in the clear, since no 3rd party is going to lose out and you're accepting all the risk. Legally... well, maybe, but do Learners get prosecuted for "no insurance" whenever an L plate blows off? Thinking

Puma, in practical terms, I'd suggest taking an assortment of bolts along see if you can get one to fit the throttle stop. All the better if it looks a bit fancy and "non tamperish".

Will it properly restrict the bike without the ECU change? Dunno, but it's something you can point to in a confident, chipper manner on the tiny chance that it becomes an issue.

I will admit to getting bored after I sold the ZZR and got the TRX around July time. Restriction is up this coming March. Not been arrested yet...but I also have never been pulled over by the police due to not riding like a knob (often Laughing).

I'd guess yes, as you would again be riding otherwise than in accordance with your license.
Undersized/damaged probably depends on anyone's judgement, but missing makes it so much easier.

Did not know about this one. See below for the rest of my reply.

No perhaps they don't get prosecuted automatically or at the first chance the police may get.
And yes, morally you're in the clear. But insurers come and ruin it for everyone. An insurer will look for anything they can to get out of paying up in case of an accident. If you do something to give them this get-out clause (learner with no l-plates, restricted license on unrestricted bike, etc), you are just running the risk of having your insurance voided when you have an accident and someone makes a claim.
If it is a risk one wants to take, that's perfectly fine, so long as he/she recognises the risk.

DAMN! just got a message from seller to say they've decided to keep the bike afterall and not sell... Rolling Eyes like, 20 minutes before I was about to set off having managed to get out of work an hour early too.

Bit miffed cos I'd really set my heart on the bike(just something about it that drew me to it), and I started getting excited that I could be riding back tonight on a big bike.

Oh well...keep looking eh. Neutral

It is a throttle stop and plug in to the ecu, handles restriction well.
takes 10mins to fit, standard size Torx screw for the throttle stop, plug remaps the fueling to match the throttle stop, pulls fine up to about 90 indicated then its a bit slower up to the ton. If your still looking at getting an ER6 below is what you need, fits from 2006 to 2011.

Bad luck. I'm sure you'll find something just as good. This is the time of the year for bargains!

Not sure if I'd pick an Er6 or an SV given the choice. Both are worth looking at. Or are you set on the Er6?

Get the seller to ride it to your house.

Or fit the restriction at the sellers house.

When Instigator sold me his ER5 (nearly 8 years ago), he rode it to my house unrestricted and then fitted the washers in my garage.

Shouldn't be an issue with it being dark, garages have lights.
