Hello,

Done my research but nothing like some lovely BCF advise, I'm buying a 125 and have narrowed it down to either a CBR 125 or a NSR 125. Could anyone tell me any pros/cons of either. I know the NSR is a 2 stroke so it won't be AS reliable (I'm guessing). On looks side I love the NSR it's lovely, I prefer the more 'square look' if that makes any sense? However I know the earlier CBRs are also kind of this shape compared to the 2011/2012 CBRs which are more 'pointy shaped'.

I can't really gather to much information on the two when it comes to major major difference, but hopefully you guys can give me some friendly and I dare say harsh advice! Laughing

Standard response: Get the cbr as it's 4 stroke, will have smoother power delivery, cheap as chips on petrol and should be fairly reliable.

Teenage advice: Get the 2 stroke, faster, less reliable overall, (But a well looked after one and you could be just fine) Factor in less MPG than a 4 stroke and you have to buy oil, depends how often you use it Thumbs Up

Get the CBR, do your test, sell the CBR, get a 600 = Profit. Thumbs Up

Hi

Equal age and condition wise if anything I would expect the NSR to be better reliability wise. But the newest NSR will be about the same age as the older CBR. NSR is built to a rather higher standard, while the CBR is built more down to a budget.

Believe the weak point of the CBR is the gearbox, while with the NSR it seems to be the stator. Although probably both are more likely to be destroyed by learners throwing them are the scenery.

All the best

Keith

I'm only 17, but I'm not one of those idiot learners who rag the shit out of bikes believe it or not, so I'll take the standard advise not the teenage advise haha! I want to get a 125 to get the experience to pass my test before Jan, so need to get one quick!

Oh right okay Keith, there is a really nice CBR in a dealers near me I went and saw today, few days ago I saw an advert in tesco selling an NSR but haven't seen it in person.

I'm getting pulled towards the CBR more, like you said Tom hopefully I can make a bit of money back on the CBR, would like a CBR 600 when I pass my test! Don't know of it'll make much difference if I get one that I've been riding a 125 version though!

Cheers for the sound advice lads!

I did that, sans the 125 part. It was fookin great. Especially when the damned restrictors fell out.

Come to insure it a 2nd year...well. I think you better have a look at insurance first. Laughing

"Standard advice" is YBR/CG/CBF/EN 125, pass your tests ASAP, get on the bike that you really want.

The Cg seems very popular for passing my test on and that! Going to take a look into it!

Cheap as as well!

Got a CBR myself and I can't really fault it. But if you can find CG/YBR or CBF cheaper you might as well have those. I only got my CBR because I had my heart set on it and I'm stubborn.

Many years ago this forum evolved from and NSR specific forum.. In those halcyon days no one would recommend a 4t commuter bike over a sexy little 2t junior racer.

There was no talk of 'doing your licence' or '125s being a stepping stone', we understood that 17 year olds wanted to rag the shit out of a learner bike and all was well....

Get an NSR, it's fun.

Derestrict it, it's even more fun..

Don't get CBR, if you want that sort of bike get a CG.. It's essentially the same, but you don't have the expensive fairings..

Honestly, I do sometimes feel there is a wee bit too much sensibleness around nowadays.

Are the NSRs really that nice? They certainly look it! I think the reliability thing come from the bike I had before. I had an RS50 and the thing fell to pieces, and I didn't treat it shit or anything.. I really do like the NSR, it's lovely.

I loved mine mate, it was derestricted (as was deriguer at the time) and was a great deal of fun.

I did a top end rebuild once which took me an afternoon and cost about 200 quid (might be more now), but other than that cost me bugger all.

Not as fast as my VFR obviously, but still put a smile on my face.

Ah right okay mate Smile. Well i'm going to look or a few of both, im in Essex so if anyone knows anyone selling either let me know. Nice CBR in a dealership here though, really nice. On the topic f the CBR the mirrors are mounted on the handle bars in the 2006 model (99 % sure they are) will it be possible to chance these without having to change anything else on the bars as I'm not sure where they're mounted. They just so ugly and big.

I've got an nsr and I LOVE it. I can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride, look at, work on, do anything with.

I've never rode a cbr so can't really compare, but an NSR feels fast. Acceleration, top speed, i've never felt slow, which i dont think you could say for any 4 stroke 125.
30bhp of an nsr to 13bhp of a cbr is a massive difference.

Build quality of NSRs is very good.
I understand all the good points about CBRs and all other 4 stroke 125s, but can't help thinking that they are the poofy second best choice. Go for power and fun Twisted Evil

I sat on the CBR in the dealers near me, felt quite light and nimble. Quite liked it. There's a fair amount of good points with the CBR and also with the NSR :p.. Guess I'm just gonna have to stop thinking a buy one f the fuckers and get my test done!

CBR will get you through your tests easy...as will most upright 125.

I have had 3 now and they are good at doing what you buy them for, learning.

They are fairly quick, nothing mental though.

+1,

let the rich kiddies supply the world with nearly new bikes, you take advantage of the 20% depreciation they swallowed.

Have you considered a CBF125 cheaper insurance, cheaper to buy, 120mpg and has the same engine as the CBR.

Similar looks to the CBR but you dont look like a "wanabee" if you see what I mean?

The CBR has a water cooled engine made in Thailand, the CBF has an air cooled lump made in India. The only thing that they share is a capacity.

I have a thing for the NSR I gotta say, since I won one at auction for £400 on ebay and the guy said "oops someone just came and bought it for £700" it will always be the fish that got away to me

I wanna try out a 2-stroke.

CBR is poserish as been said, and is allegedly thinner than your penile girth so looks fairly silly, and is no faster than most other 4-stroke 125s except fetching a premium... Insurance is probably a few quid more too

Are 2 strokes actually faster, or just better acceleration?
I imagine an NSR has the same top end speed as a YBR/CBR?
