Where's the best place to download films, music and games? I installed Kazaa desktop tonight and it made a right mess of everything and it installed a dialler which I found very difficult to remove Evil or Very Mad

Matt - can't help with your original question but Kazaa is an absolute sod to remove. An uninstall alone is not enough. Stuff still remains.

I'll upload a program that gets rid of it properly....

Download here

If you like I can send you the seup thing to load kazaa lite onto your computer. Just send me your e-mail and I'll stick it on the reply as an attachment. There are other things on the net which you can download things like music and video's from such as https://www.download.com (I think thats how you put a url on the post) anyway if you want it then give me a bell. You can use normal kazaa but if you do make sure you download a programme called 'Diet K', you can get it from cnet.com. This removes all the crap that kazaa puts on and works with it in the background.

the only thing I don't like about limewire is that it seems to scan all my files every time I start it up. this can take a while with over 12000 files. Other than that it's pretty good Thumbs Up

Depends

I normally use Bittorrent (Azureus client). That's generally ace for films.

Shareaza is also ace - a combination limewire, Gnutella, G2, and Bitorrent client. Generally good for games and warez

If you want music, go with Soulseek. Downloads are generally quick and it has the most diverse range of music of all the P2P clients.

Misguided fools.

Unfortunately the kazaa network is pretty much dead apart from PORN. Most high bandwidth users have been scared off because of the like’s of the RIAA. IRC (internet relay chat) is now the pretty much the best and the safest way to download WAREZ apart from private FTP’s.

Any way first of all you will need an IRC client; I suggest MIRC as its pretty much for PC users and IRCLE for MAC users.

Then you will need to set up MIRC so that you can queue properly in download queues.

Go into MIRC’s options and turn auto-get on and resume on.

https://www.part-trader.co.uk/guides/resume.jpg

Then turn ignore off.

https://www.part-trader.co.uk/guides/ignore.jpg

, this means that when server’s sand’s you the file you automatically receive it. BEWARE you will automatically except any files that are sent to you, Not really a big deal but there are some virus’s going around but sometimes you will wait in queue for several hours for popular files such as un-realest movies. But once you get a slot on a server you will be able 2 download at speeds of 56kbs + depending on your connection.

This is all great but where do I find the files I want I hear you say.

There are several sites devoted to helping you find the files that you want. Go to www.ircspy.com or www.packetnews.com these in my opinion are the best.

Then type in the file that you wish to search for.

When the search window comes up you will have a list like this:
For best results when searching for files set the Bot filter to online bots and the sorting to Slots.

https://www.part-trader.co.uk/guides/ircspy.jpg

A: is the name of the server that you want to join .
B: This is the name of the BOT (computer that is connected to the main server which has the file you want).
D: Is the name of the channel that you want to join (like a chat room).
C: Is the pack number of the file you want.

This may all look really complicated but its not. Ok you found the file you want to download.

1. Click on the pack (#C).
2. Mirc will then automatically open up.
3. Select create new connection.
https://www.part-trader.co.uk/guides/open.jpg
4. Then shortly after 2 windows will open. The first larger window will be the server window and show your status on the server. DO NOT close this connection. The second window is also important this is the channel window select this.
5. When the pack was clicked a piece of text was copied to your clip board. Right click in the text bar and select paste. When it appears press enter to submit it to the channel. This sends a message to the appropriate computer to send you the computer.

https://www.part-trader.co.uk/guides/request.jpg

6. 1 of four things could happen now. (A) you are sent the file (B) You are placed in queue for a file which will be sent when a slot is available (C) the Bot doesn’t respond which basically means its offline and you will have 2 try and get another file. (D) The computer try’s to send you the file and the download fales to start; this happens occasionally I’m not sure why just keep trying.

4 hours later you have a film. If you get disconnected you can resume the file download by finding the same file on IRCSPY and following the above procedure.

The file you downloaded will be more than likely be in C://program files/MIRC/Download.

The file will also probably be in a .TAR or .RAR format which is like a ZIP file but better you will need to download WINRAR to open them.

The most common format for movies unlike KAZAA is VCD (video CD) or SVCD (Super video CD) the latter being the better although DIVX and XVID are also still available.

These will play in your DVD player more than likely or you can get a Video codec to play them on your PC.

It gets a little bit complicated here but if there is enough demand I will finish the guide to included burning and playing an SVCD and VCD.

WARNING downloading warez is highly illegal

If i have made any errors please dont flame me this is only my opinion. Also the spell checker doesnt want to work so please rate post as good to counter balance the bad karma that im going to get from the spellings.

Most eye arr sea bots have their bandwidth throttled down to 5kb/s, nowhere near fast enough. On top of this you'll generallly get queued for hours first.

That said, theyre are a few ace music channels out there. But in general, you're much better off with bittorrent.

off topic: why the eye arr see bleeping?

Err, no they aren't. IRC bots aren't throttled to 5kb. I usually get around 56kb on a standard ADSL connection and up to 100 -120kb over a LAN connection.

www.packetnews.com and MIRC are definitely the way to go. Yes, you can get queued for a while but there's no point trying to download over a dial-up so there's no problem in leaving the machine queued for a while. Most of the time the queues aren't much longer than a couple of hours if you know where to go.

That depends. Mainstream channels like #altrock are great for bandwidth. But the majority of channels are smaller, with about 100 packs to a bot, and they generally cram 50 users onto a 256 k/b connection., therefore they are throttled to very low speeds In my experience Bitorrent is a hell of a lot better for most things.

Kazaa = Virus paradise.Slow connections but varied choice.Avoid!

Kazaa Lite = Better speeds & choice,but still a virus paradise.Avoid!

BitTorrent = Much better choice but be aware of who might be connecting to you. Wink

Exclamation (Alot of people have had letters from their ISP's threatening to shut them off if they don't stop downloading films/games as they have been connected to by Sony/Universal,Microsoft etc whilst downloading warez!)
Use Peerguardian or Protowall & a firewall with advanced rules/blocking options to fight this `problem`.
Can be a bugger to maximize your download speeds when there aren't many seeds, but there is a good range of stuff available.

Usenet = Best & safest option but slightly less choice than BitTorrent. Thumbs Up

Grabit! or Newzbin Pro are the weapons of choice for this but the only real downside is that your ISP may not carry any newsgroups & you might have to pay to join a news server such as Usenet.
Retention of files on good servers is about 7-10 days, most though are approx 3 days, meaning you gotta get the files quick when 1st posted.
Also, don't sign up to an account which limits your bandwidth to maybe 1 or 2 gig per month as you'll run out sooner than you think. Some Newsgroup providors have unlimited accounts.
One dvd film is approx 4.3gig and can be downloaded in about 10 hours on a 1megabit connection so you'd only get half & film & your bandwidth allowance is gone already on a limited account.
Use PeerGuardian/Protowall/Firewall as per BitTorrent.

You'll never be totally safe on the internet, but you can make it easier to block certain `peers` using the above software & configurin your firewall/internet security properly.

Hell yeah. Emule's pretty good and reliable though it can take a while for downloads to initially start due to long queue's. I run a spare comp 24/7 so that's no problem for me.
