Going to be giving the carbs a proper go over, strip down, rebuild with new o-rings, float needles etc. There are a few little cavities and holes that I couldn't get into last time.

I have heard of people soaking the carb bodies once everything is stripped. I want to take everything apart, clean it all up with aerosol cleaner, leave it all to dry and soak the bodies overnight. Then come back, rinse the bodies and all parts will be dry. Then rebuild them and then balance. But what should I soak them in?

Urine.

Naw mate. I took everything out mine and stuck the hot jet wash into them. It did the trick but watch the outside as you might blast the paint off if painted.

I heard that boiling in lemon juice or vinegar was the thing to do.

With that in mind, I stuck a pair of carbs in a saucepan but thinking that that things you could safely eat were not going to cut it, I threw some fairly industrial strength Nitric Acid I had lying about in there.

corroded surfaces really took a hit and the house stank but 1/2 hour on the hob and they were transformed from "bottom of the seabed" to "new(ish) pin".

If you have access to a gallon of Electric Motor cleaner (Carbontetrachloride) you could soak it in that.
It will soften any varnish on the carbs.
If it's for paint then Nitromors but not for too long as it may etch the carbs if left for too long.

Tizer is not as daft a suggestion as you might have thought.

Put an old coin in some Tizer, Coke or similar for a soak and see.

If your feeling experimental do the same to an old tarnished coin covered in HP sauce for 1/2 an hour.

FFS. .......... We eat and drink this stuff.! Shocked Rolling Eyes

Having said all that, carbs are not normally made of old coins. ( Well Chinese ones may be.) Laughing

May as well drop it in a gallon of Soluble Asprin or a Sterident then.
Very Happy

Is there anything I can buy at a shop that isn't organic that I can use? (that won't damage the carbs)

What about Meths? Or should I just soak in soapy water for a few hours then blast out with a hose then leave somewhere warm to fully dry?

Cillit Bang. The Grime and Lime one is fantastic. I use it all over the bike.

As said everything else will be cleaned with carb cleaner, its just the bodies that need soaking. And there are several minute cavities that I suspect may have slight blockages. I would get a wire in but they aren't straight.

I'm not too keen on cillit bang and I can't justify buying an ultrasonic cleaner with the cash flow atm.

Mate honest, i used no chemicals. Strip and clean all removable parts in hot water. Boil the jets in an old pan and take the body to the jet wash. Make sure its a hot one. I have not had a carb problem since.

just out of interest do you know anyone who has a compression tester? alos have a look at the coolant.

the reason i suggest, even tho i suspect the carbs is mine had been stood for a year or before i had it. any how even tho the head gasket was fine to start with after a while is blew a couple of wholes and gave some funny idleing and running issues. - maybe worth a shout if giving the carbs doesnt resolve the issue

I can probably find someone who has one. Was thinking of doing the clearances if this doesn't sort it. I'll sort these out and I will post back up. Don't think I'm gonna be able to do these until payday now so will just have to bum by as it is atm.
