I had a few days and some decent weather so I decided to do Dunnet Head and JOG.
Why? no reason, it just seemed like a good idea.
Starting from Ipswich->Thetford->Spalding->Lincon-> Scunthorpe -> A1 to just north of Darlington where I picked up the A68.
I like the A68 and found it to be a good road to make progress and still be able to stop when & where I wanted.
I followed the A68 all the way to Jedbugh and on into Scotland.

Into Edinbugh-> Dunfermline and time to stop for the night.
Ipswich to Dunfermline in one day is not to be sniffed at!
My bum was hurting some by the time I got there .
430 miles ish ?
I had a cheap hotel booked via Late-Rooms.com at the City Hotel.
Kitchens shut a 8.45, so no scoff if you get there at 8.50 , and their car-park is the local Pay & Display car-park so your bike will not have much security .
Luckily I found a post to chain mine to.
The room was small but clean and I was to knackered to notice the damp patch on the ceiling until the morning

DAY TWO : On from Dunfermline-> Perth and onto the A9-> Inverness.
I found that once I got passed Inverness that the A9 was a good road IMHO.
Staying on the A9 all the way up to Thurso/Dunnet Head/JOG

300 miles ish?

There are some great roads oop norrf and it`s no suprise the locals dont want us up there spoiling thier roads, I`d be the same if I lived up there.

I did get caught up in rush hour while I was up there

I also found out what my missus did with her old sex-toys

DAY THREE : Return from Thurso to Dunfermline using the A9 again.
No major shakes and nice scenery and roads all the way to Inverness, then it becomes just another busy road.
On the way I met some locals and had a stange urge to wear wellies???? Cant think why?

The bike (Hyosung GT 250 r) did`nt miss a beat, not once the only time I had a scare was when I went into a small roundabout to quick and had a bit of a slide on spilt diesel/oil.
Thankfully me and the bike stayed the right way up .
The one tip I would give is : Take a few cable ties and string = both came in handy at different times ie holding my burst panniers together.
As for you bikers out there , BCF or otherwise, I am disappoint!
on the day I was there (JOG) there was only ONE other biker there and he was German!
JOG was knee deep in pedal-cyclists doing the LE-JOG thing but only two bikers?
DAY FOUR : What a shite day that turned out to be .
Rain then rain and after that some more rain followed by some rain.
Dunfermline -> Edinbugh south-east by-pass and onto the A68->A1 just north of Durham-> A14-> Ipswich.
By the time I got home there was`nt a bit of me that was`nt wet .
The funniest thing was when I stopped at the Cambridge services, the staff got annoyed because I was leaving a puddle everywhere I went
I hope some of you find this interesting and I`m sorry that there are not more pictures.
All in all I did just under 1500 miles in four days, no great shakes by the standards some on here have done.
But I would`nt want to do that many miles in four days again for a while ( my bum wont let me) .
Next it`s the most westerly point on the British mainland ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now!

Haha, well pictures are on photobucket so maybe you can change the size on there? I'm not sure because I don't use it.
As for google maps, just go to the maps and work out the directions on there, you can drag the route to the roads you used, then press the link button on the left and copy the link in here

I thought the areas around Durham and Northumberland were cracking, and definatlely worth a second visit
I`ve even made a mental note that when I have done all four points and Lands End, Durham & Northumberland will be one of the places I return to.
Been there before in the car (it`s just not the same).
For some strange reason I have always seemed to get on with the locals up there ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |
