ZXR 750 H1 - Earth/short?

Been having some problems with the new bike seemingly eating batteries, but after today's experiment it seems that I have a short/bad earth somewhere. Basically the bike went through a nigh on brand new, fully charged battery in a day after covering about 20 miles (with the lights off).

I've checked the alternator and that's working fine (14.5V @ 4000rpm) so I'm pretty certain the charging system is OK.

Today's experiment consisted of me putting in the fully charged battery last night, but leaving the -ve off and the seat loose, and then hooking it up this morning, riding to work and then disconnecting it again. This has worked fine, as when I started the bike this evening, all dash lights were bright and the bike fired up fine. Before now they were dim, and the bike struggled starting, and for the last 2 days has meant me bumping it 2-3 times to get it home. Obviously this was a ballche in the rain, and I've got my brand new MotoBatt sat here, but I dont want to hook that up if it'll just do the same with that.

My question is, is there an 'easy' way of finding where this short/earth could be, bar checking every connection? Or is there something else that could be causing similar symptoms?

Probably the reg/rec then, its the only thing permanently connected to the battery with ignition off. They can go short, most times killing the battery with overcharging, but can go part short 'in reverse' i.e. putting a drain on the battery.

Cheers for the replies, but it looks like my test has failed miserably. Managed about 4 miles to work before it died again, the bastard thing. Not happy.
