So you can't have "a device capable of showing the location of speed cameras" (does your sat-nav do that?) and you have to have a breathalyser gadget with you (does your mother-in-law on the pillion count?) to drive/ride in France now?

Hmm.

I knew about the law against speed camera finders etc... But having a personal breathalyser, is that true?

Not quite, or at least not yet.

The law comes into effect as of July 1st, the fine is €11 for non-compliance. It also must be 'NF' approved (equivalent of the BSI 'kite mark'), a 'non-NF' approved kit will still attract the fine. As les Frogs pretty much invented the term 'petty bureaucrats', I can see them loving finding a non-NF kit and giving it a big fat 'non'.

It seems an entirely bizarre rule, as les Flics will use their own equipment to carry out a roadside test. The kit is there to test yourself if you feel it necessary - so why make it compulsory?

Be aware also that the limit in France is quite a bit lower than over here: 50mg per 100ml vs 80mg.

Note also that (for some inexplicable reason) mopeds are exempt from the legislation, but both bikes and cars are affected by it.

Dont forget the dayglo jacket, first aid kit, warning triangle and full set of replacement bulbs(!). The Frogs used to accept motorcycles as a way of life, their petty beurocrats are rapidly catching up with ours. Germany for the win, at least you are expected to have adult levels of responsibility there.

The latest news on breathalysers is that although the laws comes in on July 1st, it won't actually be enforced till November 1st. So after Novermber thats when you can get fined.
I live in Holland and there is no breathalysers to buy, everywhere has sold out and you can't get them for love or money. I'm riding to France on the 6th July so was pleased to see that we really have until November before the cops can fine us.

If the fine is €11 for not having it, and they go out of date, surely the chances of actually being stopped and asked if you have a mobile breathalyser are so low, that the cost over time is probably better for just taking your chances? Or are regular stops a common thing in france?

I would take my chances - you have to carry so much crap now you may as well carry none of it.

Although I did hear there was some sort of loophole regarding the satnavs, something along the lines of they are still allowed to show the location of "accident blackspots" ...

if you get pulled over you can always yell 'Haende Hoch!' and he will raise his arms and surrender his own breathalyser to you.

My GPS warns of speed alerts. There is also an upload we can get here showing fixed speed cameras and common manned roadside speed traps.

There is a live web site where people can upload new ones.

And the frogs make this illegal?

Of course they do.

If you believe the excuses that speed traps are for road safety purposes, you'd have to logically assume that motorists being warned they're in the vicinity of cameras (and thus, presumably, accident black spots) and slowing down to avoid being caught, would = mission accomplished.

Accept that they're merely out to generate cash, under the guise of road safety, and suddenly all the fuss about GPS identifying cameras and the policemen hidden under bushes with mobile cameras fall into place and make sense.

To be fair in my limited experience of riding in France, all of their speed cameras are signed. And there's very rarely a sign with no camera.

Further to your post above, the French Government reached an agreement with Sat-Nav manufacturers in December 2011, allowing them to provide a facility to warn of a "Danger Zone". By Law these Danger Zones must cover a minimum length of road, which is 4km on motorways, 2km on major roads and 350m in urban areas.

These danger zones may well be (i.e. are) where speed cameras have been installed. It's a semantic getaround that makes an ass of the law, or it would if the law wasn't an ass already.

I was stop by the GD's and didn;t have any of that guff even the Hi-Vi and was fine. You don;t need something to tell you about Speed Cameras its France they aren't going to chase you to England to pay a 100 Euro fine, if you get done just ignore any letters. I agree with whoever said, "They're French fuck em."

French police central computers are now linked to all other enforcment bodies in the E. U. If you do manage to outrun the plod, a letter will be on your doormat as you arrive home. Until you pay, you are a crim in Frogland and will be arrested the next time you pass any passort control.
BTW, its not advisable to annoy the French plods, they have a singular lack of humour, can impound you and your bike and will suddenly not understand a word of English, or even your fluent French. Always have at least 100 Euros on you to pay them off or they can comprehensively spoil your holiday.

^^This. I've just come back from working in Frogland, I was discussing driving, speeding etc with a French colleague.

He told me that 50Kms over the posted speed limit = automatic impounding of your vehicle.

Shocked

Lesser amounts of speed = on the spot fine.

You mean you can't speak to them, but they have a french handshake (with 100 euros in the palm)?

You pay fines cash on the spot???? Would never work here. There would just be cash changing hands as bribes and no revenue for the state.

Every time a corrupt cop has asked me for cash to pay I ask him for a receipt with his badge number on it. Why must I fork out for his drinking money?

...don't forget originals of your license, registration and insurance including Euro cover.

Reflective spots on your helmet.

And glasses if you wear contact lenses.

If you're unable to pay the fine on the spot, be aware that French Rozzers are empowered to execute you by gunshot to the head, although they do then have to drape a hi-vis over your corpse.

Fark it. All these rules. No wonder their neighbours keep wanting to eradicate them Laughing

Pretty soon as well, women must wear head scarves, and no driving on Friday.

No wonder they drown their sorrows in wine and garlic snails. It is too irritating to drive anywhere.

Just remember that an Englishman is always an Englishman no mater where he goes. Drive on the left, tell those froggy chaps that we won the war and are still winning wars. If they want to argue then they can argue with my Grandad. He fought in the war you know.
