would 5mm or 6mm cast acrylic not be better? cast acrylic is typical stronger than the "other" type of acrylic

check out a company called aquaplastic

they can get ANY form, color, thickness of acrylic and will cut to size/shape as well

Wood on motorcycles is cool.

Get yourself a nice bit of oiled hardwood.

I have wood on my motorcycle. It's currently softwood but I've got a nice bit of beech in the shed I'm going to replace it with when I get the time.

EDIT:
Or a bit of aluminium chequer-plate.

My mum made pannier mounts on her GS500 out of wood for her Scandinavian touring a few years ago.
However, she doesn't ride quite as 'enthusiastically' as me!

How big, and how much do you consider "cheap"?

Sure you could find something like this cheaper than £12 at habitat, 12"x18" :-

Do consider that shaping the soft plastic that chopping boards are made out of can be a royal PITA.

You can cut them ok, but because the plastic is soft (so it doesn't dull the blades of knives) getting the edges neat is hard. You saw it or file it and it shreds up leaving loads of stringy bits hanging off at the edges. Sanding it doesn't leave it very smooth either as the plastic is too soft.

My car battery tray is made out of an old cutting board, it looks shit as I got fed up with trying to sand/file the stringy bits off the edges and burnt them off with a blow torch. For a part that needs to look good I'd try something else but you might get on better with it than I did.

Are you going to be mounting a top box to it Covdude?
