In countries with good weather, like Greece/Portugal/Spain etc etc.
I can imagine it being a lot better. Other than the obvious heat, but then you just wear less to compensate, and ride faster to cool off.

Just asking because this weather is doing my head in. Had my first 'big bike' about 4 weeks now and have barely covered more than 200 miles due to the constant rain. When are we going go get our summer?
Rant over

None at all in Thailand, if you do get pulled over all they want to see is a driving license, you could be wearing a Fez and that would be protection enough.

In fact a friend of my brother was stopped in Phuket, Thailand and showed his North Sea Rigs Diving License, Thai Police found that perfectly acceptable.

Okay, so it's not always great Laughing

Coming back from seeing my girlfriend in Yorkshire was the worst. I had been there all weekend and it started raining as I arrived and stopped.. well.. just before I left and then was intermittent all 160 miles home.

Going through the country lanes to get to the main road was a nightmare though. I went through several puddles which were about 1ft deep and 20ft long, if not longer. Bloody scary because you can't see where the pot holes are and hitting them with any speed it like slamming your anchors on.

Waterproof boots had puddles in them Laughing

Also.... 130mph on Edge lane last year, cbr600fs rocking a set of dunlop roadsmarts.

Rain was torrential, similar to the 1ft deep mentioned about.

The rubber didnt even flinch, i think it wanted more.

I rode through Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana and it was mostly hot and I wore leathers, my nose is bent from hitting a dung beetle at over 100mph, can't remember if I had a helmet on that day.

I was living in Athens for several years, and not having to even consider the weather before jumping on the bike was great. Now I live in Yorkshire, and I am forever keeping abrest of what is going on with the weather. Watching the weatherforcast every evening to see what new area of low pressure is coming my way. Having said that: All it took to continue enjoying my daily commute, was decent waterproof gear. Struggled for years with waterproof oversuits, that's no way to have fun. Now I have quality waterproof jacket, trousers, boots and gloves. I am enjoying biking again, weather can do what the hell it likes.

VTR 1000 Firestorm Bought so I can take the VFR off the road and sort it out. First impressions: Cheap, no manners and loud as hell. Fits me quite well...

Bang on Thumbs Up to answer the original question (with my not-too-extensive-experience);

Spain - Generally safety-aware. If they don't wear much gear, they do at least wear lids.

Italy - As above wit higher blood pressure.

Portugal - I dunno never been.

Greece - The only people that bother with anything more than a pair of shorts are tourists. And the locals ride damn fast regardless.

It's cool, Cool , (obviously not temperature wise).
Despite what you may have been told it does rain in the winter, but it tends to do it in short but really intense bursts, usually a couple of minutes is enough to cause the roads to flood.

When the temp is in the high 20's to low 30's riding is cool, (in both senses).
Once you get above 35 degrees, unless you're in the shade, going faster doesn't cool you down, it's feels like standing in front of a fan heater.
One of the problems of prolonged dry periods is dust and sand on the roads, makes cornering interesting at times.

My DRZ doesn't have fans for the radiators, in the summer even 5 to 10 seconds of idling, at a stop, will start to boil the water.

The biggest problem is keeping cool, the whole safety clothing market is geared to keep you warm and dry, whereas I want cool and sweat free.

As to the other aspects of riding, there are a lot more bikes about, the car drivers are fcukin' fruit loops, plod don't give a shit, (most of the time) and you can get away with anything basically. Cool

Its not the danger of riding in the rain its just the overall experience in my opinion isnt a very fun one. I nearly always opt for the car when its raining and windy like today

When a bike is your only means of transport you learn to not get too bothered about the rain.

Her can't....
He has a CRUISER...... Are you STOOPID!
The tassle's will go rat-tailed, the paint will blister and the shiney chrome will all jump off! The tyres will turn to jelly, and it will all end in a horrible mess on the back of an AA Truck!

Easy.... I feel your pain. I really do.

When I was ten, we had a very wet Spring, and I had just got my first bike.... well.... to call it a bike was a bit optimistic.... it was a pedal & pop to rat around the field.

I would sit looking out of the window, watching the rain-drops run down the glass, waiting for a break in the weather, and as soon as I saw a ray of sun-shine, rush out to the shed, grab the bike, pedal it up and down until I got it started, then ....

Fifteen fucking minutes later, I'd ride into some long grass and the ruddy thing would sieze soon as the wet grass hot the cooling fins!

Oh well.... at least I can do something INSIDE now, while it's raining again...... take the head off, hot the piston, put it back together!

GO GET WET!

Ride to Halfords, get some ACF40 and some Solvol!

Come home, spend afternoon in the garage 'polishing' stuff!
