So, I'm not really sure how this happened as I’ve been wearing the same gear for months and mounting/riding the bike the same way since I got it. Came back from santa pod on Monday and noticed this array of deep scratches when I got off the bike, definitely weren’t there when I washed it on Friday.

Anyway..... is a bit of polish/t-cut going to fix this or I'm I looking at a re-spray? Would a bit of touch up paint help without looking too stupid? Are there protectors to stop scratches on this part of the tank without covering the whole thing with a baglux or similar?

I think I m going to have to at least protect it asap as the bike is kept outside and I don’t want any rust to creep in.

Cheers.

It looks like they have gone through the paint so you wont be able to get them out with any polish im afraid Sad

As far as touch up paint goes i think it all depends on how well its applied and how close the colour match is. I think with multiple scratches going in different directions it will be hard to cover with a touch up tbh.

You can get some pretty big tank protectors, I had a carbon fibre one that would probably have covered that far round.

so is the only way to fix this a re-spray? how much do those usually come out too?

should i be protecting against rust in the meantime?

cheers

yeah you will need some rust revention on that as it goes down into the bare metal.

yeah your looking at a complete respray. although a profesional job will cost in excess of £150/£200 (done cheaply) something worth considering might be vinyl wrap. its a pain in the arse to fit. lots of heating and stretching and so on but its typicaly cheaper and faster than a professional respray.

then once the wraps on you can just apply the tank protectors to the areas that will require it.

Thanks. i'll give them a bell and a couple of locals a bell and see if they can do anything. if not it might be a bit of a bodge job with touch up then deal with it properly when/if i decide to sell.

i'd rather it not be this way but i dont want to be spending £££sss now for a less than perfect job if im then going to have it done properly at a leter date.

i suppose get some quotes first and see how they pan out.

another option

it might be a good idea to look into the price of getting it powder coated as well.

this is usually a FAR cheaper option as powder coating companies will often do batches of different customers together which helps lower the costs.

if they give you a price ask if they can do it cheaper by including its oven time with other jobs

Powder coating a fuel tank? is that even possible?

Just get some touch up paint + t cut. Tocuh it up with the shitty little brush and then smooth it ou with some t-cut. Job jobbed.

It's how I deal with chips on my car and it looks good, just takes time.

looks like a few little stones or road grit got caught between the tank and your leg, slowly grinding away as you were riding.

No help about how to sort it, but maybe how to prevent it happening again.

Do you use a magnetic tank bag? If so check the magnets for something metal stuck to the underside of the pads.

Thumbs Up

sure it is.

you need to make sure that all the fuel has been properly drained, the inside of the tank fume free because 300*c ovens will probably ignite any fumes/fuel.

but think about it, they can powder coat computer cases, car engine parts, wheels, calipers (specialised powder coat though) bike frames, garden gates ect ect.

powder coating a tank is actually a relatively easy task.

they'd have to remove anything like fuel taps, caps screws ect ect which would need to have the powder coat removed from the threads ect but its not hard. although they would need to prep it by removing all the paint back down to bare metal.

im actually removing my tank paint/laquer with VHT strip fast next week so i will let you know if thats any good or not if you want?

less work for them to do = less costs

no one ever seen OCC powder coat a tank? lol

i still think it'll be the cheapest option for getting the whole tank redone.
