Got my Hornet 600 when i was 17, i am insured 800tpft with 3 points and a claim. Though it might be a lot more money to insure a sports 600.

You can get a Hayabusa Turbo at 17 if you like - as long as you've passed your full test and its restricted to 33bhp.

If you are 17~20 you can do your test on a 125 and be restricted to a bike with 33bhp or less for 2 years. After that you can ride anything. Once you hit 21 you can do DAS on a bike with at least 46bhp and ride anything.

£800 to insure a 600 at 17! wow! so how much would it be to insure be for me at 18 no claims or points on something like a cbr 600 or a r6?

Hornets are real nice bikes, i know a couple of people who have them and they say that their real comfy yet sporty - a combination you rarely get!

I don't really see the point getting a 600 at 18. You can't de-restrict it for 3 years (lose money) and won't even be able to do your test on it (need +46bhp).

I reckon it will be a dog to ride also, get a smaller, lighter bike with the same power - more fun.

Plus 2 strokes rule! Well, they smell and sound good......Ah, the memories!

Neal.

Nealski - to get a 600 they would have to of done their restricted test. They could tgen derestrict it after 2 years - no further test needed.

Wat_400 - Yes.

Erm, take your test on a 125 at 17 years old. Buy a 600, restrict it to 33bhp for 2 years. After 2 years your 33bhp limit is lifted and you can ride whatever you like. So by 19 yrs old you can be riding the 600 unrestricted and legally. Smile Insurance, on the other hand, could be nasty. Evil or Very Mad

Or do what everyone else does, and don't bother with the restrictors!

We wouldn't want to encourage such behaviour on here, especially as the police are cracking down on it.

On the other hand, if your restrictors "Fell out"...

No. I can't allow it. But what we don't know can't hurt us! Wink

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I'm 19 an have a restricted Hornet 600. Insurance isnt that bad. When i called around i got it to less than 500 quid for tpf+t with a 150 excess. That is with one years NCB. I was looking at getting a CBR6 but the best insurace quote was around 1200 with a 500 excess!

Are they? Or is that just TC? Does anyone actually know or have read about anyone getting done for it yet? I still reckon you'd only get told to get some fitted with a producer to make you get proof.

A full standard category A licence permits you ride any motorcycle with a power output of up to 25kW (33bhp) and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg without `L' plates, carry pillion passengers and use motorways. You are restricted to a motorcycle up to 25kW for two years (not counting any periods of disqualification). After two years you may ride any size motorcycle.

It seems I am wrong then - sorry all. Someone lied to me!!! Guess I can't really argue with the DVLA can I?

Don't paint everyone with the same brush there Nealski. Program on last night that said most accidents on bikes are from the born again bikers age range, around 40-50 mark. My dad being one of them.

Compulsary training for these kind of riders would be a far better idea than hitting them with speeding fines if you ask me.

If posting in a new name will make you check out your facts before you post nealski then im all for it Thumbs Up .

The 17 to 21 age range was always the group responsible for the most accidents be it car or bike.

Insurance companies are now saying that the profile of the highest risk rider is now a 36 year old on a high powered sports bike killing themselves on left hand bends.

They are saying that more of these riders are dying than anyone else, even BAB's. The reason being quoted is that a majority of these riders are not receiving any further training after passing their test and are able to buy bikes for the road that would have been winning WSB races 5 years ago.

Not quite that old yet but I can't wait for my insurance premium to rise! Rolling Eyes

i had an R6 at 18, was cool at the time, but was a mistake in a lot of ways looking back, not least of which i wrote it off a month later..

i never got a chance to get the best of it, cos it took me that month just to get it sorted and get used to the power, i would have been better off going from 250 to 400 rather than to 600, i would also have had more money now Razz

if you can make the jump to a powerful bike, and not crash it after about 3 months you should be ok, but its that self control thing...some of us dont have it so well Razz and having ridden a few other bike as well, i reckon i have a soft spot for the small bikes
