Which, if any, of the bikes from the past decade will become “classics” in the future?
I’m struggling to think of any, since the turn of the century, that really stand out from the crowd.

For instance, at the time, the LC, delivered a, well aimed, kick up the arse to the other manufacturers, the rest is history. These bikes and their contemporaries, from the other manufacturers, all enjoy classic status and prices these days.

The only bikes that spring to mind are the DRZ400, it ticks the “first of its kind” box, has a bit of a cult following, and second-hand prices hold up well.

Another one is the SV650, not because it’s a marvel of engineering excellence, but let’s face it, there’s bleedin’ loads of them getting used, abused then discarded. In twenty years’ time the “yoofs”, who are riding them now, are going to be hitting their midlife crisis’, and indulging in a bit of nostalgia.

So, what are your predictions?

If you look at the current "classic" Triumphs, from the 50's and 60's, certain models, T120R for instance, go for loadsamoney and others don't.
Wonder if it will be the same for the current crop of trumpets?

I was going to start a thread about this bike, but this one seems relevant enough. On the search for new bike I came across this - Triumph Legend TT

Does anyone know much about them?

The prices seem reasonable, and I think they look amazing.

lets face it, it will be a gsxr, any time I see a group of bikes there is always one. Seems like everyone who lives near me has one.

Apart from the Street Triple/D675, the Rocket III and the Buell XB series you mean?

Buell XB series will end up a "classic" simply because of its rarity and, relatively short period of production.

To be honest, there are sod all new type Triumphs over here, i've never seen one in the flesh.

What's attaining "classic" status over here, at the moment are these, Honda Chaly:-

Not really "first of it's kind" in any way that I can see Confused.
Compred to a DR600, it's a pretty similar spec, but with electric start and probably a smidge more weight, but less than the electric start DR650S
It's got a more power and more weight than an electric start DR350. Then there's the XR400 too.
There wasn't a bike with quite that combination of mid-heavy weight, electric start and mid-low power before, but it's merely on the same scales of the other bikes around it.

SV650s are very utilitarian and not very pretty - significantly lacking in character too, as opposed to the LC on all accounts.

Quote:

The 675 wasn't really groundbreaking -- and the Rocket only was because of how heavy it weighed.
The street triple is an interesting one, but is just a newer version of the speed 4; albeit based on a class-challenging bike rather than an also-ran.

So, bikes that changed the game; 98 R1 certainly has character. Possibly K5/K6 GSXR1000, but are the later ones really much 'worse' to justify this model being given all the glory? I doubt it.
S1000RR I reckon will be in there.
The triumph 675s; quite possibly in England on the whole 'we can do it'. Not so sure elsewhere. They didn't do much a 749 didn't, though a little cheaper and suffered engine issues on the road rather than track.

I agree with G. The S1000R is a shoe-in.

Also, possibly the KTM350SX.
Having not won the class since 1985, in 2010 KTM came along in to the 450cc MX1 class with a 350cc 4 stroke and trounced everyone.
Like entering WSB with your 'easy to ride' 800cc four cylinder and leaving everyone behind.

The LC became almost an 'instant' classic; it was a 'Cult' bike, an aspiration motorcycle for a generation, and accessible. That legend and popularity followed it into the 'Classic' world.
Same as the Triumph Bonaville for the previous generation, and the Early Fire-Blade, for a later one.

We now have too many sub-catagories of 'classic'.

Once upon a time, and definition closest to the way you are interpreting the term, a 'Classic' was an 'old' bike, that stood out from the crown, and was 'desirable', NOT merely for being 'rare' or 'exotic' or 'revolutionary'.

Lets look at the mele of 80's offerings; there were LOADS of 'great' bikes built in that decade; that tick SO many 'Classic' boxes.

Original GSX1100 Katana - the first concerted effort at modern styling - recognised classic

RD250/350LC - introduced mono-shock suspension & re-introduced water-cooling to the mass market; later YPVS another layer of 'technology' - recognised classic

Honda VF750F - Honda's V-4 concept "Only way to make a 4-cylinder' engione with water-cooling compact enough to fit in a motorbike! - THAT was truly ground breaking; it was 'hyper-technology' on the streets... AND they got it SO wrong, bike is as legendary as the Katana... for ALL the wrong reasons.... there are good-ones still out there, YET failed to gain any 'classic' recognition.

Kawasaki GPz750Turbo - the 'best' of the factory Turbo's, and the most popular, another very interesting 'Land-Mark' bike - but very little classic recognition.

Kawasaki GPz600R. The bike that proved Honda's VF750 'Wrong', and dragged so many eLCie boys off thier two-strokes. That was a truly 'ground-breaking' and land-mark motorcycle. - yet again, very little classic recognition.

Kawasaki GPz900R - re-set the standards for big-legue bike handling, but no where near the revolution of the 600. It's got a 'following', but not as a 'cherished' 'classic'.

Yamaha FZ750 - Genesis beam frame, slant-four motor; its where the 'MODERN' sports motorcycle, with it's 'mass-centralisation' started. - Very little classic recognition.

Slab-Side GSXR750/1100 - What the eLCie boys jumped on. A factory 'Cafe-Racer'. There's not much 'ground-breaking' in one. Yeah, aluminium frame, and oil cooling... novelty was in the audaciouseness of the full-on endurance racer body-work & clip-ons, really. Rest was Do-Do technology, as much as the VF750's. Gained 'Cult' Classic Status

The bikes that have gained 'classic' reputations, have not always been 'ground-breaking' or even THAT different; bikes that HAVE have gone un-noticed.....

AND, I think that a big simulator in the 'Classic' world has been that for maybe a couple of decades, we couldn't afford 'new' bikes; so we looked for 'special' in the 'old' bikes we could.

The design diversity of modern Jap bikes has been lacking since the R1/R6, every-one is using the same technology and following teh same trends. While, bike prices have dropped, and availability increased, we can have pretty much ANYTHING we want, for what we can reasonably afford..... there's no real motive to try 'bigging up' some old clunker!

BUT, with the credit crunch, and the big-four struggling to shift bikes on the dealers show-rooms? Ever tightening construction & use regs? How long will this last?

How long until the bikes we 'drool' over are being dropped from the catalogues, or watered down even more, or the prices are going up?

When the Chinks are filling the middle-weight market with 'cheap' 650 twins, and making sporty-fours......

And the Japs are left hanging on to the profit-peak of over-dressed cruisers, and exotic sportsters or full-dress tourers?

THEN people will be looking back to this decades bikes, and muttering that they are 'classic' to endow them with some 'special-ness', in the abscence of pure consumerist 'purchase-pride'.....

Crying or Very sad I'd hoped it was one of them experimental multi-cycle two-stroke wotsits - was going to ask for details!

Sadly not; it'd be 250cc limit if it was 2 stroke based.
Also, probably banned after the first year; but I don't think they'll do so well at banning someone using a bike not dead on 450cc Smile.

Probably going to get laughed at but the Honda SP2 is becoming a classic. Prices are still very high retailing at around 6K. I think this will become a "new classic" in the near future.
