I'm in the middle of buying a new car so I'm getting some insurance quotes from comparison websites. I'm 20, no NCB and been driving for 2 years. The cheapest quote I could get was £1190 fully comp for a 2 litre Sport 06. Keeping everything the same, I changed the "Where will you keep your vehicle overnight?" question from "Locked garage" to "Driveway". It brought it down by £250! So now I'm at £920.

It just doesn't seem logical at all, but there must be a reason based on statistics. I know a lot of people tell their insurance companies that they store their car in a locked garage because they think it will get them a cheaper insurance quote, so it's worth trying different answers to that question.

That is all.

Try adding a parent with no points or claims as a named driver. Nothing fraudulent about that (it's your policy in your name) but you *may* find it shaves another hundred or two off. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

It's cheaper to say on the street than driveway, most cars now are nicked when people burgle your house and steal the keys if your cars is on the drive and they want to nick it they know which house to rob.

Insurance quotes are different for everyone.

They are fairly bullshit at the best of times.

I always play around with the bastid drop down boxes till I see some changes!

Thumbs Up

Been playing about with some quotes on Tesco compare for the best part of an hour now. I got my quote down from £1200 to £800 keeping everything legal. Now when I get to the results page, it doesn't even go through the cheapest insurers (Elephant and Admiral). I have a quote saved for £800, I press "Amend quote", keep everything the same, and on the results page the lowest result is £2600 with Swinton.

Do these sites have a time limit or something? If you're pissing about on them for over an hour then they stop giving you the cheapest quotes?

Seems kinda strange it's just stopped working for no reason.

If insurance companies genuinely use this kind of reasoning it's no wonder they lose money on every policy.

I would imagine at least some sites will have mechanisms to stop you doing precisely what you're doing. All the comparison site will be doing is making web-service calls to the other sites - it's up to them individually how many quotes they'll serve up to any one person before they stop playing the game.

Elephant and Admiral are the same company so probably employ the same rules.

Do you know how they know? IP? Address? Is there a time limit on how long they 'ban' you for?

Clear your cookies between quotes too.

I read something about Ryanair the other day, quoting £20something quid for a flight one day, the next day, same flight was £200something. Chap cleared cookies and it was back to the first price...

Just a thought. Thumbs Up
