Which part of the exhaust on a 2 stroke makes the sound?

Front expansion chamber or end can?

Thanks Thumbs Up

You need to elaborate a bit on exactly what your asking and what you want to know/ want to achive with exhaust mods?

What bike is it for a start?
2strokes with a separate expansion chamber and silencer can often have either part replaced with an aftermarket part or both together. You need to be a bit careful with 2stroke exhaust systems and changes, as anything that will affect the noise level, is quite likely to also affect the jetting and the performance as well. i.e. removing a silencer or baffle is not normally going to have any performance benefit, and is usually quite the opposite and could easily reduce performance and reliability severely.

i was just wondering if i change the end can if it would change the sound/noise levels.

just saying because my end can is rusted and looks really bad.

Yes it will obviously change the sound and most aftermarket cans will be noiser. A good quality decent sized silencer like a DEP one is striaght through and free flowing, but shouldn't make the exhaust note much louder, but it will sound a bit deeper most likely.

I think a nice performance silencer on a std expansion chamber is about the nicest sound on a performance 2stroke. On many bikes, losing the std double skinned and sound deadened expansion chamber for a light weight thin gauged performance pipe will often make the bike sound very tinny and crackly, possibly a bit like a Motocross bike. Im not saying that it's a better or worse sound, but i bet on a road bike it gets quite annoying after a while TBH!

You may or may not have to re-jet depending on the bike and the exhaust system/silencer you fit. Many two strokes have quite unrestrictive silencers, so changing them won't always ruin the carburation or affect the exhausts efficiancy. But some two stroke bikes have quite restrictive silencers after the expansion chamber, or use the silencer part of the exhaust as part of the reverse cone, so modifying or changing the silencer could seriously affect the carburation and effectiveness of the exhaust.
