Afternoon all.

I want to give my forks a full rebuild in the near future. With RWU forks you can just buy some plastic waste pipe and drive the seals in, but USD forks have the caliper brackets and spindle gubbins at the bottom of the stanchion.

Is there a DIY fork seal driver you can make for USD forks, other than tapping them in with half of an old seal and a hammer? I don't fancy spending £30-40 on a proper seal driver.

I put a grinder to my old seal... cut into 2 pieces but lost about 5mm each side, tapped them in using a piece of rubber and a mallet. Easier to show with photos Laughing

You can still use plastic waste pipe - cut a slit down the pipe (I find it's rarely the perfect size, so do this anyway). You can then slip it over, despite the chunkier fork end.

For normal forks, I'll also often do Paddy's suggestion as well; though of course then you don't need the "cutting in half" bit.

If you were anywhere near Bexleyheath I have an adjustable 35-45 and a fixed 48mm fork seal driver in the tool box.

But in the past I have visited a workshop with everything in place and asked for the seals to be driven into place.Donated £2 to the coffee tin as it took 10 seconds and the paperwork would have taken longer than the job itself.

Thanks, some good responses (apart from the spammer Laughing)

Thanks for the kind offer Fizzer but I think the petrol to get to Bexleyheath might cost as much as a driver Thumbs Up

A few 'good' USD forks you can do this.
The vast majority of 'good' (ie not really cheap) forks you can't do this for either type - because the bushes hold the stanchion in behind the seals.

Yep, I knocked my CG seals in with a large socket before the stanchion because there are no bushes, but my Showa forks on the RSV have bushes behind the seals.
