Decided i love my Yamaha WR250F and it perfect for green laning with its knobbly tyres. The issue i have is that i enjoy riding it on tarmac as well but the engine does not have quite enough thump when you hit 50mph, so i have been keeping my eye out to fill my urge for something similar. I noticed a bike listed on Gumtree a few days ago and assumed that it was a typical gumtree bike being sold by the local buck toothed pikey but thought as i had nothing to do i would go and have a look anyway.

Turned up and to my surprise the guy seemed like a nice bloke so i had a quick look over the bike and handed him a deposit.

Anyway, i had the urge to share photos of my new bundle of joy with some complete strangers off the internet.

I found this in a box of bits that came with the bike, why does it have these bits drilled in this clutch part?

Went to see if the sprocket nut was finger tight like it was on the wr400 i picked up last year. Guess what, it was so loose it was only held on my the sprocket cover and luckily the drive shaft teeth were not damaged. Guess i need a new sprocket locking washer as well.

Holes in the clutch basket will be for cooling/lubrication of the plates.
Seems a tidy bike, how much she set you back?

ok cool, thought thats what it might be for.

It not that tidy TBF and needs a few little things doing but for the age and type of the bike its in reasonable condition. Quite a few fixings look like they have been torqued up by Stevie Wonder with a chisel riding a pony while on smack, but other than that it runs and had £1000s worth of work done in late 2011.

I got the bike for 1k with a set of offroad rims and some other bits and bats.

The rims are worth £400 ish i reckon after looking on ebay so if it blows up i will not make such a big loss is i sell it for parts.

It leaks oil a little from the gear shifter when warm so i will have to see how bigger job it is to replace the seal. It starts on first kick hot or cold without using the choke or hot start so thats a good sign.

Jobs to do:-

1.) Fix any slight oil/ fluid leaks
2) Replace Oil Filter, Oil, Air Filter and Spark Plug.
3) Check it has antifreeze in the coolant
4) Check all bearings paying special attention to the lower shock absorber bearings and headstock bearings which often fail if not re-greased.
5) Change brake fluid and inspect brake piston and pipes front and rear.
6)Check Valve clearances and adjust if required
7) Figure out how the after market display works
8) Fit removable baffle so i can test/check the bike over when running it in the garage. Yup its loud.
9) Remove and clean chain and attach front sprocket tab with new lock washer
10)Check tyre condition and pressure.
11) Fit new grips
12)Remove all tacky/faded decals.
13)Insure, wheelie, Section 59 and go home with big grin on face.

I cant wait to ride it, but i need to change the head bearing as there is quite a bit of play. I presume the head bearings gone as the bikes a wheelie machine.

I think it may be next year before i ride it as i want to strip it right down and rebuild as i have found quite a few dangerous bodges and nuts and bolts loose. Shocked

Might as well keep a record of what i do to the bike on here as my memory is crap.

A few more snaps anyway.

Removed the exhaust to find the weld has snapped on the bracket that holds the end can to the frame, will have to sort that out at a later date. Decide to pull some of the stickers off as well.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03146_zps0a585a49.jpg

I then removed the chain to give it a proper clean and also cleaned the hubs. The rims are a really nice gloss black and look nearly new.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03163_zps4103e8bf.jpg

Started to rub down the exhaust system ready for a polish

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03157_zps7c8faa23.jpg

Used some quick steel to bodge the end can support bracket.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03156_zps167580e8.jpg

Looks like the previous owner has stripped out the standard airbox and fitted some aftermarket pipes and a K+N air filter.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03155_zps01b6f10a.jpg

yurp...................... thats gonna be fun.

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03152_zpscc6226ba.jpg

front wheel clean

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03142_zpsf5c9d335.jpg

rear wheel cleaned

https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%203/DSC03166_zpse8f93357.jpg

Next job is to pop the tank off to check the valve clearances. I will also pop the front wheel off and start work on getting to the head bearings.

Looks like Stevie Wonder put that rim tape on Razz Can't complain for what you paid, seems like a bargain.

Strip off the rim tape and stickers and it'll look better.

I didn't rate goldspeed tyres, personally.

Its a YZ400F 1998 fitted with supermoto rims. I also have a WR400F 2000 with knobblies and they seem very similar bikes frame/engine wise.

Where are you from then? What bike do you have? Wink
