crf 250 on road?

hi whats a crf250 like as an on road back for nipping to work and back on? 10min journeys and occasional rides out for hour . also can i put smooth road tyres on one

Why 200-350cc - a weird way to choose a bike?

What other things do you plan to do with it?

If you're sticking to road, lanes and gentle enduro, I'd go for a XR400, DRZ400 or similar. Much better for general use.

dont need anything bigger want a fairly light bike for the corners on way to work. basically its work and back not needed for anything else so would like the geared down crf250 if i can get away with it

Choose a competition bike and you'll get race servicing and race daily ability.

Also, a good bit higher likelyhood of it getting stolen as it can easily get sold on.

The competition 4 strokes are more fragile than the 2 strokes - and when they go wrong, they cost a lot more to fix too, as there's a lot more moving parts etc. The basic 2 stroke design is a lot lighter, so doesn't need everything to be paired down to the lightest possible etc.

They do - DRZ400S is an example.
The WR250R if you're stuck on lighter and slower - the R actually signifies a trail bike rather than the WR250F which is a competition enduro bike.

The X uses the same engine I think - but we're only talking 10kg less than the DR400SM which has a much more sensible engine for road use.
You could also consider something like the KTM690SMC - it weighs about 2kg more than the 250X, but has both double the power at least probably, as well as a much more flexible engine for road use.

the X model CRF250 shouldn't be a problem. Mine gets an oil change roughly every 500 miles, and valve clearances checked every second oil change. As long as you're prepared to put the time in, then they're perfectly usable for what you describe, and the cost isn't much. A new piston kit is around £120, and each shim is a couple of £. I've only had to adjust the valves once in my ownership.

An 85cc motocross bike is specifically designed to be smaller than a 'full size' bike. Adults can ride the big wheel versions ok; but they're still a chunk smaller than the 125s/250s and bigger (which are all about the same size - about as high a seat height as any bike has.)

Competition enduro bikes are designed for enduros - which will be a few hours long and involve constantly changing RPM etc.
The 4 strokes often suffer from prolonged high static RPM as you may get on the road.
Often they'll be serviced after every race.

Two more competition bikes; neither road registered and both are going to have been heavily (ab)used on the track. One had non road legal cut slicks on the rear I believe. Didn't pay more attention than that.

The bigger engine sizes should cope with road riding at similar speeds better as they'll be less stressed.

Still wouldn't be my choice for your needs.

As a second bike for back road blasting fun, maybe.
