Hi all

I've got a full license and insurance for all 3 of my bikes.

I have a XR 125 which the girlfriend has been learning on and ideally wants to do her CBT on it.

Now......will most insurers insure her without a CBT so she can do her CBT with the bike?

Not sure whether to see if getting her insured for just the one day also then worrying about insuring for the year another time.

Also, am I right in thinking she can't be a named driver just for the XR?

Cheers

Jeff

CBT places will have their own bikes, why stress on it?

This, and it's usually included in the price. No point in stressing yourself out with sorting insurance, transport to the CBT place (she can't ride it there without the CBT) etc when they've usually got a decent assortment of 125's. Plus if she drops it, or damages it in any way, new bike for her and no costs. In my CBT I ended up getting a puncture whilst on the road portion (no fault of my own, it just went flat, rear) and we rode back slowly, was on another identical bike 10 minutes later and back out on the road.

The only problem with hiring a bike is that you can never be sure what you will get.

On the offroad training I was lumbered with some crappy moped that struggled to pull away, but luckily on the on road part I was lent a 125.

I could have easily ended up on the moped for the road part though which would have annoyed me a lot.

Personally I'd just phone round the local CBT places and see what they use before I booked it. The place where I did my refresher training had virtually new XR125's and Gladius's. The bike hire and the insurance
(and helmet and wet weather gear if I'd needed it) were all included in the price.

I had bought my bike prior to taking my CBT and had no problem getting it insured. The guy who I did my training with brought it up to the training centre in the back of a van. So I don' t see you having a problem with insurance, just getting it to the training centre.

So if you are fairly certain she'll pass and you think she'll stick with it, I'd just take out a years policy if I were you.

you will be "lumbered" with either a CG125, a VanVan or a YBR125, all of which are usually maintained very highly because riding schools pay a lot of money to be able to teach the CBT and it isn't worth the law suit of sending someone with no real experience out on a bike on the road, having an accident and finding out it was a poorly maintained bike that caused it, why would a reputable CBT training school risk their livelyhood?

Just use theirs.

The CBT is not supposed to be fun, it is a task to put behind you and move on. When I took my test we just jumped on a 250 and wobbled about by ourselves, now we are restricted to a 125 and we are taught how to wobble.
When I realised that the DVLA had removed my bike classification from my licence (I had a 15 year lay off from bikes) I had to be taught the wobbling basics again, it was not a fun day.

I just rang around and the 2nd one I rang (aQuote) said it was no trouble at all. Just to ring them if I didn't complete the CBT on the specified day.
(£118 for the year fully comp)

Snowie's CBT had expired by the time she had the 'Pup' ready for the road, so had to repeat.

We had the same dilemah......

Friday: Bike ready for MOT, MOT booked, I needed it insured to ride it there. Bought policy 'on-line' got 'e0cert' printed off. Rode to MOT.
Tuesday Paper Documents arrived... form in there requesting copy of her driving licence, and mine, and copy of her DL196 form...
We 'ignored' it!
Still 24 days of 'cooling off' period to cancell policy remaining!
Saturday Her CBT had been 'booked'. I rode over, with her on the pillion to the school.
Nigel, decided to make me useful, and got me making the coffee's for every-one, so I hung around for the first part of the course... took some photo's.... then buggered off and cought bus home.
Sat twiddling thumbs for the day.... decided at 4pm to ride over and see how she was doing.... She passed, so we rode home on our own bikes.... but of she hadn't completed, would have dumped my bike, pillioned her home & got bus back to get mine.
Other wise I would have been waiting for a phone call to come get her with the trailer!
Monday Photocopied licences & DL196 form.... posted them to Insurance co!

TIMING.... all a matter of TIMING!

Thanks for the replies all.

She has been learning on my XR for days here and there on a learners course area off the road (has roads, roundabouts, traffic lights etc)

Once she does her CBT it will be hers to insure and for me a back up bike.

If she drops it, she drops it, it's a learner bike after all so I don't expect it to remain intact.

I wasn't stressing? Just wondering if it was possible to insure without CBT certificate so she can use the XR on it rather than another bike (which is also not a problem)

Thanks Andy_UK, may give them a call.

Thanks Mike, sounds like you had a fun few days!

She will be getting insured once she has done her CBT so I was just wondering if she could be insured for the CBT and use that bike.

They didn't even ask to see a copy of the certificate when I completed the CBT (neither did Swinton who I went with this year).
