Following from https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=248877&highlight= the line on https://assets.dft.gov.uk/publications/motorcycling/DfT-Motorcycle-Road-Safety-Campaign-Topline.pdf caught my eye.

"While virtually
all drivers want to be safe, it is well document that many bikers positively thrive on
the risk involved in riding a motorcycle"

Are you one of those people?
Do those people exist?

I don't know if it's the risk I enjoy, as i'd rather not have to take risks wherever possible when on the road, unless I really cba to wait. I think it's more being open and feeling the speed, the same way go-karting is fun despite not going that fast

Risk-taking is often confused with thrill-seeking.

I enjoy riding motorcycles because I find they are more fun and involving than driving a car. Not to mention more cost effective in terms of performance.

I don't ride because I thrive on the possibility of my chin sliding across the floor at 50mph.

Rollercoasters are thrilling. But they're not risky in any reasonable sense.

i'd say i'm definitely not in it for the risk and try to reduce as much risk as possible to be fair, i imagine the majority are the same though there are nutters about who push things as far as possible.

Riding a bike makes me feel good. Most things that make me feel good are, usually in some ways "risky". If I didn't like taking risks I would sell my bike and buy a Volvo.

edit: if I could cope with the risk of driving a Volvo surrounded by risky bikers who inconsiderately crash into me as I am pulling out with my eyes shut.

I have to confess I am.

Bikes aren't 'dangerous' as bikes go, other road users make them dangerous as a bi-product of their own actions but I don't help matters with the way I ride.

There is definitely a certain buzz that comes from surviving a situation in which you had the potential of snuffing it.

My brain mis-interprets that as a boiling-rage for the cager responsible Laughing

I love my bike, i love riding it. It annoys me no end when people ruin that by trying to kill me Mr. Green

Most likely the research is skewed by people pretending to thrive on the danger because they think it makes them seem all manly and hard and stuff.

'Risks' do get my heart racing

But I don't do anything stupid
My idea of risk is filtering, and I try to do that as safely as possible.
Where are our risk assessment experts?

I never fuck around at any real speed, nearly dropped my bike slowly around a pissing wet industrial estate seeing what happens if I hammer on the rear brake

Good practice if anything

without the risk I would not bother getting onto a motorcycle, why would I want to? Sprint and Hillclimb is about going against the clock and by braking as late as you dare into corners you win time, occasionally it puts you into the tyres or straw bails or worse. If I do not exit a corner breathlessly and sweating I have not tried hard enough.

For me the risk is the same as a car, a motorbike is just more fun and cheaper. So used to the risk I hardly think about it.

In getting old I'm actually more annoyed by thrillseeking fair weather riders with poor skill on high powered machines, they're more likely to crash into me.

I do 50,000+ miles a year and haven't had an accident since 1996. So not too bad for a dead man riding Laughing

I like riding fast and controlled risk-taking - its what gives me a buzz.

I also like riding slowly and taking in new sights, sounds, tastes and smells - its called experiencing life.

Why worry about your motives unless you are at the Russian roulette stage, in which case you are on borrowed time anyhow.

I love riding my bike (fast), it gives me a thrill Thumbs Up

As for taking a risk whilst riding my bike, nah! I`ll stick to being a pussy.
I`ve been slung down the road (through no fault of my own) and it f*cking hurts!

This.

And this, for me.

I vary a lot though. Sometime I love to just open the throttle and give it all she's got, taking calculated risks. Yet a few minutes down the road I might kick the speed back a bit and relax and take in the views. When I'm somewhere new I take virtually no risks and concentrate fully on the scenery and new roads and such and finding where I'm going as I don't use a SatNav.

I don't see what the issue would be with sprung stabilisers myself. I'd at least give them a go...

I do not take ridiculous risk's on the the road - the last thing I want to do is die a knobber that could potentially kill someone else.

Closed circuit/racing/off-road is different entirely - love the feeling of fast, single track woods riding knowing that your riding fast enough to impale your self on the pine branches.

I just accept that the risk is there whenever i go for a ride. the only difference i see from a biker and a car driver is that the car driver has a false sense that there is no risk in a car.
