''What Tyre'' for my Hornet

Been looking around for a good set of tyres for my Hornet, at the mo' i have a Michelin Pilot Road which is not good for my riding style and my front is a Dunlop (dont know witch one).

problem im having with my rear tyre is it wheel spins when a dump the clutch in 1st (only a short squeak) or even when power on the throttle out of a sharp corner the wheel just slips.

basically i want a set of tyres i can ride hard with no (not at many) problems,

i was looking at the Conti RoadAttack 2, but no going to lie this is my first 'big bike' so dont know to much about tyres. I did have a Pirelli on my 125 and that was awesome.

Pilot Roads are a good tyre really, quite a few of my riding mates use them on a variety of bikes all with more torque than your Hornet. (Aprilia Falco, GSXR 750K5 and a 955 Daytona) And none of them have any problems with grip.

Maybe you are just being a bit over enthusiastic?

My Dunlop Qualifier 2 rear lasted for 4K miles and gripped ok but I never really felt 100% confident that it was not going to try to kill me, apparently they are known to move about a bit.

Avon storm ultras are supposed to be very good and last a fair number of miles, a bloke I know has them on a Street Triple R and he can light the rear up when he rides like a prat, but he says he has to make it happen.

For ultimate grip in the dry, Racetec's but don't expect 2K miles.

i've always been a fan of pirelli diablo's. Either the diablo corsa or corsa 3. The corsa 3 is dual compound which means it is harder in the centre and softer on the edges so in theory should last longer than the standard diablos. I didnt notice any difference in lifespan though and one didnt feel any better than the other.

I've got michelin pilot power 2CT's on at the moment as the bike came with them when i got it. They get good reviews wherever you look but i find they take ages to warm up compared to diablos and to me they always feel like there moving around when cornering, sort of greasy feeling.

In short, get standard pirelli diablos. There normally on offer as a pair deal at m&p

A multicompound sports touring tyre sounds ideal for you. They cost a bit mroe than the pilot road but they are better tyres.

The idea is that they have a harder, longer lasting compound in the middle and a softer, stickier compound on the edges - i.e. grip when cranked over and a bit of tyre life when used on the motorway.

I've been using pirelli angel STs on my CBR6f for a while now and have been rather impressed with them. They don't slip and slide and the tyre life is pretty good, looking at about 6-7k from a rear on my bike but there are some odd fuckers than get 10k+. I do mostly commuting with a few pleasure miles, if it's quiet i'll pick up the pace but I'm no maniac. Can't fault the tyre as a road tyre.

Same story for the pilot road 2, brother uses them, did a few trackdays on them - gets about 7k from a rear whilst some people somehow manage 10k+.

If I was in your position I'd look into a set of pilot road 2s. The PR3 is possibly better (no direct experience, it reviews better) but it costs a lot and the PR2s are more than adequate. Reason I'd go for the PR2 over the angel STs is that the STs have a retarded angel pattern on them and they don't seem to last as long.

When my current rear dies I'll fit a set of PR2s.

PR3's are so good in the wet used them on a K1300S and no wheel spin and the bike has been sold and come back in 4k latter and tyres are still good.

I had Pilot Road 2's fitted in March and have been very impressed with them. Chicken strips are less than a centimetre, wet performance is excellent and I'm hoping I'm going to get at least 8k miles out of them. That's 2 years worth of commuting and rideouts. IMHO they were cracking VFM as well...
