Hi everyone! Smile
Going to take a look on a bike today, to local dealer.
Looks like nice bike, low miles, good condition, good price,
BUT!!! its only one key with it... Question
How bad is it then?

Dont know about your side, but here if a vehicle is stolen the insurance asks you for both sets of keys. If you don't have them they suspect insurance fraud or negligence, like you left the keys in the ignition.

You might want to follow up with your insurance about the implications of only 1 key

How big a problem it is depends on the bike. If there isn't a coded transponder in the key that ties into an immobiliser then getting a new key cut doesn't cost a lot, brother paid about a tenner IIRC.

If the key forms part of an immobiliser then the charge can go up to silly numbers (i.e. £100+) but there are ways of coding them yourself on many bikes if you have the main key.

Finally, if you are unfortunate enough to lose the one remaining key then for the non immobilised bike you just need to replace the lockset or get a locksmith to make you a key for your lockset. If you lose the key on a bike with a key based immobiliser then replacing the key seems to require a new ECU (many monies), this is certainly true for my CBR and it is true for lots of cars too. I am not aware of any ways around it but am happy to be enlightened if anybody does.

Agreed, and another tip is to search eBay for original key blanks. Normally less than a tenner and then you don't have to have one dodgy looking key.

Hi

My Bandit when new only came with one proper key. The 2nd key is a cheap one without any extra plastic around the top.

All the best

Aye my er5 came with only one key, the second day of having it I went to a key cutting place and they cut an identical one for me. Cost £4 I think.

Yup did the same here local trophy cutting place did it for £5, one key isn't really anything to worry about at all.

i suppose you could always ENSURE its noted on your insurance policy "only one key" or something if its transcoded keys and you cant afford to get a second one done.

that way the insurance company cant "suspect" anything about only having one key

If you are worried about your insurance demanding 2 keys in the event of a claim, make sure the bill of sale clearly states only one key was supplied with the bike.

My NTV came with one key, and I got another cut 'cos I know what I am like.

I think the real problems are with the bikes with a red 'master' key. Lose that and it will cost you a fortune.

This if you want to replace a key from them looking at the lock, you are looking at about £60 if it doesn't have a chip, compared to a new lockset which can cost upwards from £60.

That compared to a 5 minute wait and £5 even if you keep the key at home it will save the future potential cost.

Nothing like that here at all. My Buell only came with one key, as did my Triumph and my MZ. My RD350 has two, but pretty much any old Yamaha key... any old Screwdriver will unlock it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

My bike came with one key, call to triumph and 10quid later I have a spare.
I'd ask them to sort out a second key if I was buying from a deaer. So easy to snap a key in the fuel cap or loose it down the back of the sofa.
