No such thing as a silly question, only a silly answer!

With that said, how the hell do the plod know that you've passed a CBT? Does your license get sent away and come with with some sort of stamp on it or what?

You provide the certificate to them when they request it.
Not necessarily at the scene, within some number of days if I recall.

Yeah that, they don't.

I was gonna buy a bike from some guy who said he hadn't bothered doing it, and he'd "do it one day". Apparently (according to him) even if you don't produce it nothing happens.

Just me and a guy were talking about it at work and he said when his CBT lapsed he wasn't going to bother renewing it, and it got us thinking how they know if you have one or not.

Is it actually worth doing it then? Shocked

Just as anything license related, it's generally not worth bothering until you crash.
Then you're likely to be up the creek without a paddle.

It says on the back of the certificate to keep a note of the number in case you lose the certificate. Which would imply that the certificate number isn't recorded any where else.

I was asked to email a scan of it to validate my insurance though and you definately need to produce it when you do your tests.

As someone said you need it to do your test, so at some point it needs to be done..

I wouldn't want to take the chance of not doing it or anything.

Is there a chance that maybe your insurance could be void if you haven't done it? If so and you had a bit of a crash that wouldn't be to great either..

Yeah even if I thought I could get away with it, I still wouldn't risk it as it may effect my other entitlements as I'm a HGV driver so that's my job and wouldn't risk that. My livelihood also.

I'm one of the ones that also needs to take the test before next year too otherwise i'll need to wait.

The bit about not driving/riding in accordance of your licence (Or something like that).

Doesn't it not say on CBT paper, that it needs to be carried at all times while riding? I would look but I don't have one.

I got stopped with L's on and the sum total of the investigation was being asked "Have you done your training thing?"

I agree that you won't need it, until you really need it.

The trouble with it is:

You can ride along happily for years with L plates and no incident. The moment you have an off, or get stopped, and you do not have the CBT then your in a world of shit. You will be riding outside of the terms of your license and your insurance will be invalid.

For the sake of £100 is it worth it?

I'd think of it more as a £50/year 'subscription' to motorcycling until you pay your lifetime fee and pass your test.

CBT is £100.
Mod 1, 2 and Theory is about ~£120 if you pass first time.

Might as well go for it if you have a 125.

Its good training anyway, even if you have done it before. You will probably get away with it on a simple traffic stop, but if you crash your buggered.

Really? Suggests to me it IS recorded elsewhere or such emphasis would not be made on keeping a note of it. I would suggest the manual input of DL number crossed to CBT number has ran into problems before, hence being advised to keep both numbers.

As mentioned, if you are stopped, then you will be asked to produce your CBT certificate within 7 days at a Police station of your choice.

failure to produce would result in you being reported and summonsed for the offence of failing to comply with the requirements of a provisional license.

Records are kept by the DSA.

Every quarter training schools have to complete returns which lists the name of each student they have trained together with the DL196 certificate number issued against that student. This list can be accessed on request by the Police in a similar way that your license details can be accessed with DVLA on completion and submission of a VQ2 form.

There can also be repercussions in the event if a crash. Whilst your insurers would probably still cover third party claims, because of the fact that you were not riding in accordance with the requirements of a provisional license, it is unlikely that they would maintain your normal level of cover, premiums would increase substantially if you could get further cover.

If the insurers had given you cover and not requested a copy of your CBT, they would be at fault and would have to cover 3rd party claims.

It's quite likely they would then persue you for the cost of said claims in court though, if you have told them you have one and don't.

Like most have said above, for the sake of a £100 it's not really worth it.Also, my insurance company wanted a copy of the certificate to validate my policy and chased me for it. With no CBT then your insurance becomes invalid which means points and fines if something goes wrong.

Get it passed it's a lot less hassle.

Did the insurance ombudsman uphold the insurance co's refusal to pay when he appealed to them?
